Job summary

United Airlines is hiring a software developer in the Data Enablement team to build mission-critical, real-time middleware and data caches across baggage, flight operations, reservation management, and check-in domains.

You will work on cloud-based solutions using modern tools and enterprise-grade integration software, delivering high-performing services with React front ends and Node.js backends. Strong TS, GraphQL, AWS, and DevOps experience are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in CS/CE/MIS or equivalent work experience.
• 8+ years in design, development, testing and debugging software systems with React or similar frontend tech.
• 5+ years of practical React experience with deep understanding of hooks and rendering behavior.
• TypeScript mastery with strong typing and scalable design.
• Proficient in JavaScript (ES6+), HTML/CSS, accessibility and responsive layouts.
• Experience with Redux or similar state management libraries.
• Hands-on testing experience with Jest/RTL/Vitest.
• Familiar with Vite/Webpack/Babel/ESLint/Prettier pipelines.
• Strong Git knowledge and PR-driven workflows.
• Ability to debug complex issues and deliver maintainable solutions.
• Node.js backend integration or BFF experience.
• Knowledge of AWS services and cloud-native patterns.
• Experience with GraphQL clients and API integration.

Job overview and responsibilities

United Airlines’ Customer Technology Platform department partners with business and technology leaders across the company to create high performing services and real time messaging applications across key airline functionalities such as Booking, Check-in, Payment, Reservation systems and Operational Systems to help support the commercial and digital Channels of United.

As a software developer in the Data Enablement team, you will be responsible for the development of mission critical applications, while working with a team of developers. This individual will build high performing, real-time middleware solutions in the extremely critical domains of Baggage, Flight Operations, Reservation Management and Check-in. You will play a large role in building data caches and real time messaging applications, used by operational and commercial systems across the company. Additionally, as a developer, you will build these applications with a focus on delivering cloud-based solutions. The individual will use leading edge technologies and enterprise grade integration software on a daily basis.

• Participate in full development life cycle including requirements analysis and design. Serve as technical expert on development projects
• Write technical specifications based on conceptual design and stated business requirements. Support, maintain, and document software functionality
• Identify and evaluate new technologies for implementation. Analyze code to find causes of errors and revise programs as needed. Participate in software design meetings and analyze user needs to determine technical requirements
• Consult with end user to prototype, refine, test, and debug programs to meet needs. Recognized as expert in field, knowledgeable of emerging trends and industry practices
• Conducts the most complex and vital work critical to the organization
• Works without supervision with complete latitude for independent judgment
• May mentor less experienced peers and display leadership as needed

Qualifications

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems, MCA and/or equivalent work experience

• 8+ years of overall experience in design, development, documenting, testing, and debugging of new or existing software systems with React or any other Front End technologies

• 5+ years of experience working with React and have a deep understanding of React internals, hooks, rendering behavior, and modern patterns.

• TypeScript Mastery: Strong typing discipline, generics, and scalable type design.

• Modern JavaScript: Proficiency with ES6+ features and browser APIs.

• HTML/CSS: Strong grasp of semantic HTML, accessibility (WCAG), responsive layouts, and modern CSS techniques.

• State Management: Experience with Redux, Zustand, MobX, or similar libraries.

• Testing: Hands-on experience with Jest, React Testing Library, Vitest, or equivalent.

• Tooling: Familiarity with Vite, Webpack, Babel, ESLint, Prettier, and modern build pipelines.

• Version Control: Strong Git knowledge, including branching strategies and pull-request-driven workflows.

• Problem Solving: Ability to debug complex issues and propose pragmatic, maintainable solutions.

• Node.js: Experience building or integrating with Node.js backends or BFFs.

• Cloud Platforms: Familiarity with AWS services (S3, ECS, Lambda, CloudFront, Route 53).

• CI/CD: Experience with automated testing, builds, and deployment pipelines.

• GraphQL: Hands-on experience with GraphQL and clients such as Apollo or Relay.

• Design Systems: Experience working with or building component libraries using tools like MUI, Chakra UI, Storybook.

• Technical Leadership: Experience guiding front-end direction, standards, or mentoring junior developers.

• AI Model Familiarity: Hands-on experience leveraging multiple AI assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to accelerate development, refactor code, and support technical documentation, demonstrating adaptability in choosing the right tool for the task while applying sound engineering judgment to validate AI-generated output
