Planning In-charge Opencast Coal Mining
Location: Kusmunda, Korba, Chhattisgarh
Nature of Role: Full-time, site-based
Operation Scale: 17 MTPA coal production and 34 million cubic metres of annual overburden removal
Experience: Preferably 10-30+ years, including at least 10 years in mechanised opencast coal mines and 5 years in a senior mine-planning and/or operations role
CTC: 18-24 lakh per annum (Salary is not bar for desirable candidates)
Role Overview
We seek an experienced mining professional to lead integrated mine planning and production coordination for a large mechanised opencast coal operation. The candidate must combine sound mining engineering knowledge with recent hands-on experience in translating annual targets into practical excavation sequences, coal-exposure plans, HEMM deployment schedules and mine-development programmes. The role requires regular field inspections, close coordination with operating teams, early identification of production constraints and timely preparation of corrective plans. It is not limited to office-based planning or MIS reporting.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- B.E./B.Tech or its Equivalent or Diploma, in Mining Engineering from a recognised institution.
- Valid DGMS-issued First Class Manager’s Certificate of Competency (Coal), unrestricted or restricted to opencast workings.
- Substantial experience in large mechanised opencast coal mines, covering both coal production and overburden removal.
- At least 5 years of responsibility in mine planning, production planning, mine management or senior operations coordination.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in preparing and implementing excavation schedules, coal-exposure plans, HEMM deployment plans and mine-development programmes.
- Ability to work full-time at the mine site and undertake regular inspections of working faces, benches, haul roads and dumps.
- Strong analytical, coordination and management-reporting skills.
Key Responsibilities
Mine Planning and Production Scheduling
- Prepare and periodically update annual, quarterly, monthly and weekly coal-production, OB-removal and mine-development plans aligned with approved plans.
- Translate production targets into seam-wise, bench-wise, face-wise and equipment-wise executable schedules.
- Plan excavation sequences, advance OB removal and coal exposure to maintain continuity of coal production.
- Identify critical constraints and prepare recovery plans for production shortfalls.
- Support medium- and long-term mine-development planning with the relevant technical teams.
Face Readiness, Land Availability and Mine Development
- Prepare integrated land-availability and working-area readiness schedules linked to the excavation programme.
- Identify land, R&R, infrastructure-shifting and access constraints affecting planned work areas.
- Coordinate with the client/mine owner, land/R&R team and authorities for timely handover of working areas, within the company’s assigned scope.
- Plan haul-road development, ramp access, dump capacity, drainage, dewatering and monsoon preparedness.
- Monitor mine-development milestones and elevate constraints before they affect production.
HEMM Planning and Productivity
- Prepare equipment deployment plans based on excavation quantities, material characteristics, lead, lift and working space.
- Review shovel-dumper matching, equipment availability, utilisation, cycle times and productivity.
- Coordinate with Operations and Maintenance to align fleet deployment and maintenance schedules with production priorities.
- Identify equipment bottlenecks and recommend changes in deployment or working arrangements.
Performance Monitoring and Cost Control
- Monitor coal production, OB removal, coal exposure and mine development against approved schedules.
- Analyse deviations and recommend corrective actions with responsibilities and completion dates.
- Review operating cost drivers including equipment productivity, fuel consumption and changes in lead and lift.
- Prepare concise MIS reports, dashboards and management presentations highlighting performance, constraints and decisions required.
Technical Coordination and Compliance
- Coordinate with Operations, Survey, Geology, Maintenance, Safety, Civil, Electrical and other teams to maintain a common executable plan.
- Reconcile planned quantities and progress with survey measurements and operating records.
- Incorporate applicable safety requirements, approved mine-plan provisions and environmental conditions into planning.
- Coordinate with the statutory Mine Agent, Mine Manager and Safety team on bench and dump geometry, haul-road safety and other operating constraints.
- Align production schedules and progress reporting with MDO/client contractual requirements, where applicable.
Technical Skills
Essential
- Practical opencast coal mine planning and production sequencing.
- HEMM deployment, fleet productivity and operating-cost analysis.
- Ability to read, interpret and critically review mine plans, sections and survey drawings.
- Strong working knowledge of MS Excel, PowerPoint and management reporting.
Desirable
- Hands-on working knowledge of AutoCAD.
- Experience with Minex, Surpac or comparable mine-planning software.
- Experience with Coal India subsidiaries, Singareni Collieries, NLC India Ltd, other large coal producers or MDO operations.
