Job summary

UltraTech Cement Limited, the cement flagship of Aditya Birla Group, is seeking a Department Head - Safety (General Manager) to lead safety across multiple locations in India. You will plan, organize and coordinate with function heads to implement the SHE policy, run inspections, and build high-priority risk controls.

Key duties include incident analysis, safety promotion campaigns, development of safety procedures, statutory compliance, and strengthening ISO 45001:2018.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organise and coordinate with Function Heads, HODs and Head of Safeties on SAFE policy implementation and risk controls.
• Run plant inspections against checklists and participate in safety review meetings.
• Coordinate PPE purchases and develop top-priority control measures using risk hierarchy.
• Review incident reports, analyze accidents, and report monthly site safety statistics to leadership.
• Develop safety procedures, circulate unsafe practices, and conduct safety inductions for staff and contractors.
• Monitor statutory compliance and manage safety audits, lifts, cranes and other equipment inspections.
• Drive ISO 45001:2018 (OHSMS) improvements and support safety committees and audit teams.
• Develop subordinates through coaching, trainings, and support for professional safety qualifications.

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities:

• Safety Implementation: Plan, organise and coordinate with Function Heads, HODs and Head of Safeties on effective implementation of the SHE policy and safe work practices, run plant inspections against developed checklists, participate in departmental, functional and sectional safety review meetings, coordinate PPE purchase, and build control measures using the risk hierarchy with priority to the top three levels
• Incident Analysis and Reporting: Review incident reports and analyse all types of accidents and incidents, give feedback to FHs and HODs for implementation, collect and maintain data on accidents, man days lost and loss of property for periodic review and action planning, and send monthly site safety statistics to the sustainability board and Corporate Safety Head
• Safety Promotion and Awareness: Identify and formulate programmes that motivate employees, run near-miss reporting with cash reward and suggestion schemes, drive rewards and recognition, display boards and toolbox meetings covering employees and contract workforce, and conduct National Safety Day, Fire Service Day, Road Safety Week and monthly theme-based campaigns along with scheduled mock drills
• Development of Safety Procedures: Develop safety procedures and policy, improve incident investigation and accident analysis to build standard safety practices, circulate unsafe practices as OFI to concerned departments, review site safety procedures submitted by subcommittees and standard champions for Unit Head approval, identify hazards and associated risks, and conduct safety induction training for company and contractual manpower
• Statutory Compliance: Monitor statutory compliance on safety rules and regulations, organise safety committee meetings and the inspection, testing and certification of lifts, hoists, cranes, pressure vessels and lifting tools and tackles along with structural stability by a government recognised competent person, update and submit the onsite emergency plan, organise third party safety audits every two years through government certified auditors, and liaise with DISH authorities
• Management Systems and Safety System Strengthening: Drive development, review and improvement of ISO 45001:2018 (OHSMS) to achieve high standards of safety, ensure each process is studied for activity identification, risk assessment and hazard prevention with SOPs and appropriate HIRA and JSA in place, coordinate the Apex safety committee and facilitate the seven subcommittees, and work as a catalyst for their effective functioning alongside audit team site visits
• People Development: Develop subordinates through coaching and guidance and cross-functional projects and assignments, organise inter-unit site safety visits, send the team to safety professional workshops and training, and guide and support them towards recognised safety professional diplomas, degrees and certificates
