Customer Engineer
Job type: Full Time · Department: Post Sales · Work type: On-Site
Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Rocketlane is a fast‑growing SaaS company redefining how professional services teams deliver customer projects. We recently raised $60M in Series C led by Insight Partners, bringing total funding to over $105M from investors including 8VC, Matrix Partners, and Nexus Venture Partners. With Nitro, our agentic execution platform, we’ve built an AI‑powered engine that configures systems, runs migrations, generates documentation, and surfaces delivery risks, right inside customer project workflows. We’re 200+ people building a product that services teams love, and we’re just getting started.
As a Customer Engineer, you’ll be the hands‑on technical engine behind how our customers connect Rocketlane to the rest of their tech stack. Working alongside FDEs, implementation teams, and Product Managers, you’ll spend your time understanding a customer’s tools, platforms, and data, and then building the pipelines and integrations that make everything talk to each other.
This is a Customer Engineering role where you won’t be expected to run enterprise accounts solo on day one. Instead, you’ll join client calls, learn to read a customer’s technology ecosystem quickly, and take ownership of well‑scoped engineering work: data models, integrations, scripts, and connectors. Over time, as your judgment and customer instincts grow, you’ll take on bigger pieces of the deployment and start feeding what you learn in the field back into the product.
If your final‑year project, a hackathon build, or a personal side project involved wiring systems together, wrangling messy data, or building something people actually used — that’s exactly the muscle this role needs. If you love writing code and being close to the customer, and "pure backend engineer" feels too far from the people using what you build, this role is for you.
Build and maintain data pipelines and integrations that connect Rocketlane with the tools our customers already use (CRM, HRMS, ERP, finance tools, data warehouses, internal APIs).
Model and shape messy, real‑world customer data so it’s clean and usable in production.
Write Python scripts and small utilities to move, transform, and validate data between systems.
Learn how each customer’s platforms, tools, and data fit together, and translate that into a clear picture the team can build against.
Join technical discovery and working sessions with senior FDEs — listening, asking sharp questions, and gradually taking on more of the conversation.
Work with LLMs to build customer‑specific automations: from simple prompt‑driven scripts to connecting Nitro agents to customer data.
Debug integration and data issues, do root‑cause analysis, and ship fixes quickly — with support from senior team members while you’re ramping up.
Surface recurring customer patterns, edge cases, and gaps to Product and Engineering.
Help build reusable templates, connectors, and internal tooling so each deployment makes the next one faster.
0–3 years of software development experience, or strong, demonstrable
project experience (final‑year projects, internships, hackathons, or open‑source work) — comfortable writing clean Python.
Solid grasp of data structures, data modeling, and databases — coursework or project‑level SQL and an understanding of how data flows between systems is enough.
Comfortable reading and working with REST APIs: testing endpoints, understanding auth, and wiring up integrations — even if this was only done in a class project or personal build.
Some hands‑on exposure to LLMs: prompting, calling model APIs, or building small AI‑powered tools — a weekend project counts.
Genuine interest in the customer side: the confidence to be on client calls, ask good questions, and explain technical things clearly — think: explaining your project to a professor outside your specialization, or to judges at a hackathon.
A bias toward action — your project history should show you dug into problems on your own rather than only completing assigned coursework.
Experience with ETL / data pipeline tools or integration platforms (Make, Workato, Boomi, or similar) — academic or self‑taught exposure counts.
Familiarity with AI‑assisted dev tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Replit, etc.).
Exposure to cloud (AWS/GCP), Postman, Docker, or webhooks — free‑tier or personal‑project experience is fine.
Any internship, coursework, or project experience in a customer‑facing or B2B SaaS setting.
A GitHub, portfolio, or demo link for your best project — we’d genuinely like to see what you’ve built.
Want to build real things that go live in customer environments in weeks, not quarters.
Enjoy the mix of writing code and being in the room with customers.
Are early in your career — including brand new to the workforce — but hungry to grow fast into a full Forward Deployed / Customer Engineer.
small team, real problems, your work in production.
you’ll be mentored by senior FDEs and see how enterprise deployments actually work.
