Job description

Consultant, People Operations & Analytics
Working at Teach For India

Teach For India is on a journey to reach an India free of poverty and filled with love by ending educational inequity in our country. Fifteen years into our journey we are a movement of ~5000+ Alumni working at all levels of the education system, who are reaching 1 in 10 children across the country. These Alumni have graduated from our two-year Fellowship Program where they taught in under-resourced classrooms to put ~33,500 low-income children on a different life path. Today, we have ~1000 Fellows and are the largest pipeline of driven, skilled talent into the educational ecosystem in India.Over 16,000 Teach For India students have appeared for the 10th grade board examinations till date, with an impressive 95% pass rate across cities as of November 2024.

In 2022, we embarked on Phase 4, our fourth strategic phase. We have a bold and ambitious ten-year journey ahead of us that aims to grow 50,000 leaders, who will work collectively, and with love, to transform the lives of 1 in 10 low-income children in our regions, through an education that unleashes the potential of self, others and India. In this decade, five key priorities will lead us to this vision.

  • Strengthen our core Fellowship to build strong teacher leaders who provide an excellent and equitable education to our children and continue to do so beyond the Fellowship
  • Scale our impact by strategically introducing additional Fellowships as alternative pathways for leadership development
  • Match the Alumni of our programs at an intersection of their interests and the needs of the system and our children
  • Advocate for key issues that impact educational equity, and engage 3.5% of the population in the movement for educational equity
  • Act collectively with our Alumni to learn about and address key issues in our regions.

Our work will only be completed when we have built a movement of leaders that is large enough to ensure that every child in India attains an excellent education.

We pride ourselves as being a passionate, idealistic, mission-driven team of individuals. We’re committed to learning and excellence in our roles, and to being deeply rooted in our core values.

What Teach For India Can Offer You
  • The opportunity to be part of one of the most established and visionary movements in the education sector in India which is at a pivotal point in terms of expanding its scale and outreach across the nation and working with changemakers across the country.
  • A challenging yet flexible workplace in which every individual employee’s Staff journey is tracked for excellence and leadership development.
  • A work environment in which employees’ holistic well-being is a core priority, enabling people to be their best selves.
  • Access to connections and resources from the global Teach For All network that includes partner organizations spanning 50+ countries across 6 continents.
  • Remuneration that is competitive within the top quartile of the Indian NGO pay scales, and a benefits package that includes extensive medical insurance and maternity coverage for both parents.
Position Summary

Reports to: Manager, People Operations & Analytics

Team: People Operations & Analytics, HR Team

Location: Mumbai (hybrid, based on need)

Duration: 6 months (extension based on performance and need)

The rules that govern how we employ and pay people (labour law, tax structures and statutory compliance) keep shifting, and we need someone whose job is to stay ahead of that rather than react to it after the fact. We are looking for a Consultant to play that role for us: someone experienced enough to research, track and pre-empt regulatory and tax changes, act as our eyes and ears for what might be coming, flag risk before it becomes a problem, and advise us on the way forward. We would like this person to bring the same rigour to how we run payroll and plan headcount, building more robust systems rather than only reviewing what already exists.

Why This Role Matters

Regulatory and tax changes do not announce themselves loudly. They show up as a compliance gap, a penalty or a scramble, months after the window to act quietly has closed. Having someone whose job is to see these changes coming, and to tell us plainly what to do about them, protects Teach For India's trust with every Staff member, Consultant and Fellow we pay. It also means adapting within the real limits of an NGO budget and fundraising cycle, finding the compliant, sustainable path rather than the most expensive one. This is a chance to build that foresight into how we work, rather than only responding when something breaks.

Team Overview

People Operations & Analytics sits within Teach For India's People (HR) function, and is the team responsible for the data, systems and processes behind every HR decision: payroll, PF, onboarding and exit data, headcount planning, and the platforms (Darwinbox and Salesforce) that hold it all together. It is a small, hands-on team, working closely with HRBPs, Payroll, Finance and Technology teams to keep our People data accurate, our processes compliant, and to advise on decisions across the organisation.

Responsibilities

As a Consultant, People Operations & Analytics, you will work on:

Regulatory, tax and compliance advisory. Your core focus is to research, track and pre-empt changes in labour law, tax structures and statutory compliance, acting as our eyes and ears for what might be coming and translating what it means for us before it becomes urgent. You will keep us ahead of India's revised labour codes and other shifts in compliance requirements, including changes that affect CTC, our compliance processes and employee wage structures, and advise on what we need to update as a result. This runs across our data collection practices, our contracts and the way we pay each employment type (Staff, Consultants and Fellows) as policies and headcount evolve. When something needs to change, we want more than a list of risks: we want restructured options and a clear recommendation on the way forward, considered through both an organisational lens and an individual one, so we know what to change and in what order.

Payroll systems and automation. We would like you to bring best practices, tools and solutions that improve the efficiency and accuracy of how we run payroll, building more robust systems that let payroll run seamlessly, automating manual steps and minimising manual data entry wherever possible. That starts with reviewing our current payroll processes and division of labour from end to end, with fresh eyes, so you can flag efficiencies, risk points and single points of dependency.

Projections and financial modelling. We also want you to strengthen how we project and model our people spend. That means bringing projections and financial modelling best practices to our annual Headcount Projections exercise (the process, the tooling, and how scenarios get built and approved) and turning the numbers into insight we can act on: benchmarks, PF variance, variance driven by changes in law, and a clear view of CTC with benefits shown, so that leaders can see trends and understand variances early rather than after the fact.

Other areas we are open to. We are genuinely open to your recommendations on what else this role should own. One area we suspect could use the same treatment is a statutory compliance calendar covering PF, PT, ESIC, TDS, the Bonus Act, Gratuity and other recurring filings, so that deadlines never rely on memory.

Additional Responsibilities

As a Consultant at Teach For India

  • Contributing to the team goals and priorities beyond individual goals and priorities.
  • Serving as an ambassador of the Teach For India brand and an advocate for our work and for educational equity in our country through both internal and external communication after committing time in our classrooms to understand our work more deeply.
  • Supporting with key organizational areas such as Recruitment, Selection, Fundraising, Volunteering, Movement Building.
Minimum Qualifications, Experiences and Expectations
  • 5+ years of experience and expertise in Indian labour law, tax structures and statutory compliance (PF, PT, ESIC, TDS, the Bonus Act, Gratuity and related requirements), including the recent labour codes.
  • A track record of advising organisations through regulatory or tax changes, translating them into a clear way forward rather than only knowing the rules.
  • Strong communication skills: you will be explaining regulatory nuance to people without your background, clearly and without alarm.
  • Solid, hands-on experience running or improving payroll at scale, ideally across multiple employment types.
  • Comfort advising across multiple employment types (for example Staff, Consultants, Fellows and contractors), each with different compliance considerations.
  • Strong Excel and analytical skills, comfortable building and maintaining an MIS or tracker from scratch.
Preferred Qualifications, Experiences and Expectations
  • Experience advising on headcount planning or workforce budgeting.
  • Experience with Darwinbox, Salesforce or similar HRMS or CRM platforms.
  • Experience working in contexts with donor compliances, such as CSR, FCRA and Charities Commissioner audit and reporting pressures.
  • Prior experience with a non-profit or an organisation with multiple employment types.

Note: We want to hear your unique voice and perspectives through the process, hence all applicants are expected to personally author statements of purpose/essays in the application form. Sole use of AI or Chat-GPT based tools may lead to disqualification from the process.
