Job Title: Consultant Nephrologist

Department: Nephrology & Renal Sciences

Reports To: Chief Medical Officer / Medical Director / Head of Department

Job Purpose

The Consultant Nephrologist provides expert, evidence-based clinical leadership in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of renal disorders. This position oversees comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care, directs renal replacement therapies, and drives clinical excellence through multidisciplinary collaboration and academic governance.

Core Responsibilities
1. Clinical Excellence & Patient Management
  • Conduct advanced outpatient consultations and manage complex inpatient admissions for acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
  • Diagnose and treat secondary complications, including refractory hypertension, complex fluid/electrolyte imbalances, and metabolic bone disease.
  • Lead daily ward rounds, optimize therapeutic regimens, and coordinate critical care consultations for unstable renal patients.
2. Renal Replacement Therapy & Interventional Procedures
  • Oversee the clinical and technical governance of the Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis units, ensuring strict adherence to kinetic modeling and safety standards.
  • Perform high-precision diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including ultrasound-guided native and transplant percutaneous renal biopsies.
  • Insert acute central venous hemodialysis catheters and collaborate with vascular surgery for permanent AV fistula/graft planning.
3. Transplantation & Specialty Care
  • Drive the medical evaluation, risk stratification, and preparation of living and deceased donor transplant recipients.
  • Manage immediate post-operative immunosuppressive protocols and long-term surveillance to mitigate graft rejection and infectious complications.
4. Healthcare Governance & Quality Assurance
  • Champion clinical audit participation, root cause analyses, and peer reviews to optimize patient outcomes and minimize hospital-acquired infections.
  • Standardize clinical pathways and protocols in alignment with international guidelines (e.g., KDIGO, KDOQI).
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate junior medical staff, fellows, and nursing teams to foster a culture of continuous learning.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Medical Degree: MBBS or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Postgraduate Training: MD/DNB in Internal Medicine or equivalent.
  • Super-Speciality Certification: DM/DNB in Nephrology, MRCP (Nephrology), American Board Certification, or equivalent national registry enrollment.
  • Licensure: Active and unrestricted license to practice medicine from the relevant national/state medical council.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of post-qualification experience operating at a senior registrar or consultant level within a tertiary healthcare environment.
