Job Purpose

The Consultant in Transfusion Medicine will oversee the clinical, technical, and administrative operations of theBlood Bank and Immunohematology laboratory. This role ensures the provisioning of safe,high-quality blood components, the resolution of complex serological anomalies, and direct clinical consultationfor advanced patient care, including apheresis and massive transfusion protocols.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

• Clinical Consultation: Provide expert medical advice to clinical specialties on appropriate blood componentutilization, massive transfusion protocols (MTP), hemovigilance, and management of refractory patients.
• Immunohematology Laboratory Supervision: Oversee complex serological workups, including antibodyidentification, resolving ABO/Rh discrepancies, evaluating autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), andmanaging hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN).
• Apheresis & Specialized Procedures: Manage therapeutic apheresis procedures (plasma exchange,cytapheresis) and stem cell/bone marrow collection and processing if applicable.
• Quality Assurance & Compliance: Maintain strict compliance with national regulatory bodies (e.g.,DCGI/CDSCO, NABH, NABL). Implement and monitor robustQuality Control (QC) frameworks across all testing platforms.
• Transfusion Reaction Investigations: Lead medical investigations into adverse transfusion reactions,ensuring timely analysis, reporting, and implementation of safety interventions.
• Donor Management: Supervise donor selection, screening, blood collection drives, and the mitigation ofdonor adverse events to maintain an adequate and safe blood supply.
• Academic & Training Initiatives: Teach and mentor fellows, andtechnical laboratory staff. Drive clinical research and regular audits within the department.
