Detailed Job Description - Transformer Manufacturing Plant, Chittoor

Designation: Coil Winding Section Manager

Department: Winding Shop - Transformer Manufacturing

Reporting To: Head - Manufacturing / Plant Head

Location: Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh

Transformer Capacity Range: Up to 20 MVA (Power & Distribution Transformers)

Qualification: B.Tech (Electrical Engineering)

Experience: 15 Years (Transformer / Heavy Electrical Equipment Manufacturing)

JOB PURPOSE

Manage HV, LV, and tapping coil winding operations for power and distribution transformers, ensuring dimensional accuracy, insulation integrity, and turns/tapping precision as per design. Drive winding-shop productivity, quality, and on-time delivery of wound coils to the core-coil assembly section.

PROJECT PHASE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Review winding design (helical, disc, layer, CTC as applicable) and conductor specifications for new orders with the design team.
• Plan and coordinate procurement of conductors (CTC, paper-covered copper/aluminium) and insulation materials (crepe paper, pressboard) with Purchase/SCM.
• Set up winding machines, formers/mandrels, and tooling for new coil geometries and ratings.
• Execute prototype/first coil winding trials and verify dimensions, turns count, and insulation build against drawings.
• Provide winding-shop capacity and lead-time inputs during order scheduling and project planning reviews.

PRODUCTION PHASE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepare and monitor daily winding schedules across HV, LV, and tap-winding lines aligned to core-shop output and assembly pull.
• Supervise winding operations for dimensional accuracy, correct turns/tap positions, and insulation layering as per drawing.
• Oversee conductor and insulation material issue, consumption tracking, and scrap control.
• Coordinate in-process checks (resistance, dimension, visual insulation integrity) and manage non-conformances.
• Coordinate drying/pressing of wound coils prior to handover to the assembly section.
• Maintain traceability of conductor batches and insulation material lots used per coil/transformer.
• Ensure timely, quality handover of wound coils to the Core-Coil Assembly section as per schedule.
• Coordinate preventive maintenance of winding machines with the Mechanical/Electrical maintenance teams.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

• Strong knowledge of transformer winding types - helical, disc, layer, continuously transposed conductor (CTC).
• Understanding of insulation systems, electrical clearances, and creepage distance requirements.
• Hands-on experience with manual, semi-automatic, and CNC coil winding machines.
• Ability to interpret winding drawings, calculate turns ratios, and verify tap-changer connections.
• Familiarity with IS/IEC standards governing transformer winding and insulation design.

LEADERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

• Lead winding supervisors, machine operators, and insulation-fitting staff across shifts.
• Coordinate closely with Core Shop, Core-Coil Assembly, Design, and Quality teams.
• Drive training on winding standards, new conductor types, and machine operation.
• Conduct shift handover reviews and resolve production bottlenecks promptly.
• Promote a defect-prevention and continuous improvement mindset on the shop floor.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)

• Winding defect/rework rate (%).
• Turns and tap-position accuracy (first-pass, %).
• On-time delivery of wound coils to assembly (%).
• Conductor and insulation material yield vs. scrap norm.
• Winding machine utilization/OEE.
• Safety incident rate in the winding shop.

SAFETY & COMPLIANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Enforce electrical safety practices while handling conductors and testing equipment.
• Ensure ergonomic lifting/handling protocols for heavy coils and formers (mechanical aids, trained riggers).
• Maintain machine safety interlocks and guarding on winding equipment; enforce LOTO during maintenance.
• Mandate appropriate PPE (gloves, safety footwear, eye protection) in the winding shop.
• Ensure safe storage and handling of insulation materials (paper, pressboard) to prevent fire hazards.
• Comply with ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001 and plant EHS and housekeeping standards.
