Job summary

SYSTRA India is seeking a Chief Safety Expert to lead safety management for metro, rail and infrastructure projects across the country, ensuring compliance, risk mitigation, and safe execution.

The role covers developing safety policies, hazard controls, trainings, incident investigations, and stakeholder engagement with clients and regulators. The ideal candidate has engineering degree in safety and extensive rail experience, including urban rail exposure.

Qualifications

• Graduate in Engineering with specialization in Safety.
• Minimum 20 years of experience in railways or railway related industry.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in urban rail based passenger carrying system.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement and maintain the project's Safety Management System and safety plans.
• Define safety objectives, policies and strategies for construction, operation and maintenance phases of the metro project.
• Lead hazard identification, risk assessment and mitigation across all project activities.
• Conduct site safety inspections, audits and reviews to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Lead investigations into accidents, incidents and near-misses; analyze causes and implement corrective actions.
• Organize safety training, toolbox talks and awareness programs for project staff and contractors.
• Develop and test emergency response plans and crisis management strategies.
• Monitor and enforce safety performance of subcontractors and suppliers.
• Prepare and review safety documents, hazard logs, MOS and reports for management and authorities.
• Prepare regular safety performance reports and recommendations for improvement.
• Serve as focal point for all safety communications with clients, regulators and independent assessors.
• Champion safety culture and continuous improvement across the project lifecycle.

Currently, we are bidding for Metro Rail projects across India. The position of Chief Safety Expert is the key position in these BIDs.

Missions/Main Duties

• Safety Management System: Develop, implement, and maintain the project’s Safety Management System and safety plans in accordance with statutory, contractual, and best practice standards.
• Safety Policy & Planning: Define safety objectives, policies, and strategies for construction, operation, and maintenance phases of the metro project.
• Risk Assessment & Hazard Control: Lead hazard identification, risk assessment, and implementation of appropriate mitigation measures across all project activities.
• Inspection & Compliance: Conduct regular site safety inspections, audits, and reviews to ensure compliance with local, national, and international safety regulations.
• Incident Investigation: Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, and near-misses; analyze causes, develop corrective/preventive actions, and ensure implementation.
• Training & Awareness: Organize and conduct safety training, toolbox talks, and awareness programs for project staff, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Emergency Preparedness: Develop and test emergency response plans, evacuation procedures, and crisis management strategies.
• Subcontractor Management: Monitor and enforce safety performance of contractors and subcontractors, ensuring adherence to project safety standards and procedures.
• Safety Documentation: Prepare and review safety documents, hazard logs, safety method statements, and reports for management, authorities, and stakeholders.
• Reporting: Prepare regular safety performance reports, statistics, analyses, and recommendations for continuous improvement.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the focal point for all safety-related communications with clients, regulatory bodies, consultants, and independent safety assessors.
• Continuous Improvement: Champion safety culture by identifying trends, learning from incidents, and promoting the adoption of best safety practices throughout the project lifecycle.
