Job summary

SYSTRA is seeking a Chief Resident Engineer (Underground) in Mumbai with extensive railway project experience to lead tunnel and station supervision, contract administration, and geotechnical risk management. The role demands deep knowledge of underground construction, safety, and multidisciplinary interface coordination.

Ideal candidates will have 25+ years in railways and 5+ years in urban rail projects, delivering high-quality, safety-focused outcomes on complex metro schemes.

Qualifications

• Minimum 25 years of experience in railways or railway-related industry.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in urban rail based passenger carrying system.

Responsibilities

• Construction Supervision (TBM & Stations): Lead the technical oversight of TBM operations, segment erection, and deep station excavations to ensure structural integrity and adherence to the design.
• Contract Administration: Act as the primary contractual authority (The Engineer) to certify monthly payments, evaluate contractor claims for time/cost, and issue Variation Orders for design changes.
• Geotechnical Risk Management: Monitor Instrument & Monitoring reports daily to track ground settlement and building tilt, ensuring excavation does not damage city infrastructure above ground.
• Safety (HSE) Enforcement: Enforce strict safety protocols specific to underground environments, focus on confined space entry, adequate tunnel ventilation, fire safety, and emergency evacuation routes.
• Interface Management: Coordinate handovers between Civil and System contractors to ensure the structure gauge allows safe train clearance.
• Quality Assurance & Method Approval: Review and approve Contractor’s Method Statements, shop drawings, and materials, and enforce correction of defects prior to handover.

Chief Resident Engineer (Underground) is the key position in these BIDs.

Missions/Main Duties

• Construction Supervision (TBM & Stations): Lead the technical oversight of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations, segment erection, and deep station excavations (including D-Walls and strutting) to ensure structural integrity and adherence to the design.
• Contract Administration: Act as the primary contractual authority ("The Engineer") to certify monthly payments, evaluate contractor claims for time/cost, and issue Variation Orders for design changes.
• Geotechnical Risk Management: Monitor "Instrument & Monitoring" (I&M) reports daily to track ground settlement and building tilt, ensuring excavation does not damage city infrastructure above ground.
• Safety (HSE) Enforcement: Enforce strict safety protocols specific to underground environments, focusing on confined space entry, adequate tunnel ventilation, fire safety, and emergency evacuation routes.
• Interface Management: Coordinate the critical handovers between the Civil team (tunnels/stations) and System contractors (Track, Signaling, Traction, and MEP) to ensure the structure gauge allows for safe train clearance.
• Quality Assurance & Method Approval: Review and approve the Contractor's Method Statements (Work Procedures), shop drawings, and materials, and enforce the correction of any defects (Non-Conformance Reports) prior to handover.
