Job summary

The John Cockerill Group is seeking a Lead Automation Engineer for its Hydrogen Business Line to be based in Mumbai. You will lead the automation design across FEED and detailed engineering projects, while driving new product development and ensuring regulatory compliance.

You will coordinate with global teams, manage supplier interactions, and advance cyber‑security and network architecture for industrial automation. Fluency in English and French is required.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree in Control/Automation/Instrumentation.
  • 15–18 years in process design and engineering in an industrial environment.
  • Experience in Oil & Gas or Energy sector is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Functional Safety, EMC, Explosive Atmosphere, API.
  • Fluent in English and French.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects and work autonomously.

Responsibilities

  • Lead automation design for FEED and Detailed engineering projects.
  • Define control architecture and integrated control system philosophy.
  • Develop PLC programming and SCADA configurations (TIA Portal, Siemens).
  • Modify and enhance SCADA systems for better functionality.
  • Ensure ATEX safety compliance across projects.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and manage FAT/SAT activities.
  • Perform on-site commissioning and international assignments as needed.
  • Develop engineering templates and promote continuous learning in Hydrogen sector.

To support the development of its Hydrogen Business Line, John Cockerill Hydrogen (JC H2) is looking for a Lead Automation Engineer (m/f) to be based in Mumbai India office.

The Lead Automation Engineer is part of the EAI team, which includes people specialized in industrial electricity, power conversion, automation, and instrumentation, located all over the world in Hydrogen team (India, China, North America). She/He will be responsible to lead the automation design of domestic and international FEED & Details engineering projects. She/He will also be part of the development team of new product for the Hydrogen Business.

  • Based on requirement, build the best automation solution in term of reliability, scalability and cost efficiency.
  • Write the specifications, participate in technical discussions with customer and suppliers
  • Identify future solution, based on market evolution.
  • Identify improvements and/or weaknesses.
  • Follow-up new technologies and suppliers’ development to ensure the best technical and economic solution for each of our products.
Key Responsibilities:

The Lead Automation engineer will be responsible for:

  • Read and understand the customer' specifications and establish deviation list between John Cockerill usual solution and the request.
  • Consider local regulations and the specific requirements.
  • Initiate the basic design (control architecture, integrated control system philosophy, etc.)
  • Define the preliminary purchase specification.
  • Ensure boundaries of scope and interfaces with suppliers.
  • Develop solution for PLC programming, configuration, and troubleshooting, starting with Tia Portal Siemens (from V18) to meet project requirements.
  • Modify and enhance SCADA systems to improve functionality and performance.
  • Integrate new features and modules into existing SCADA systems as per project specifications.
  • Safety Compliance (ATEX):
    • Ensure compliance with safety standards, particularly ATEX directives, in all automation projects.
    • Implement safety measures and protocols to mitigate risks associated with hazardous environments.
  • Understand and develop industrial network, in diverse communication protocols, such as Profibus, Profinet, Modbus, etc.
  • Configure and troubleshoot communication networks to facilitate seamless data exchange between automation components.
  • Develop the IO list relative to a projet;
  • Ensure the implementation of robust cybersecurity measures to protect industrial automation systems from cyber threats.
  • Ensure the follow-up of suppliers, including receipt of material
  • Participate to FAT and SAT related to it's studies, based on checklists for verification of product conformity
  • Engage in short-term assignments at John Cockerill Hydrogen offices, as well as international customer or supplier locations during studies.
  • Develop engineering process and templates for the team.
  • Interested and ensure the technological watch, be proactive in the continuous learning of Hydrogen sector
  • Following topics are key advantages.
    • Knowledge in electrical basic design or instrumentation design
    • Experience in WinCC Unified
    • Perform drive parameter tuning to optimize the performance of motor control systems.
    • Troubleshoot and fine-tune drive parameters to achieve desired operational outcomes.
    • Fine-tune control algorithms and parameters to ensure precise regulation and control of industrial processes.
    • Analyze system performance data and adjust regulation and efficiency.
    • Conduct on-site commissioning activities, including system testing, integration, and optimization. Collaborate with project teams to ensure successful installation and deployment of automation solutions at client sites.
Education and Experience
  • You have an engineering degree B.E. (Control/Automation/Instrumentation) field,
  • You have minimum 15-18 years' experience in process design and engineering in an industrial environment
  • Experience and knowledge in the Oil&Gas or Energy sector is an asset
  • Being proficient in process control and P&ID understanding.
  • Knowledge of the following standards, on top of electrical ones (IEC, NEC):
    • Functional Safety
    • Electromagnetic CompatibilityExplosive Atmosphere
    • API
