Job description

We are looking for an experienced Calypso Back Office & Accounting Specialist with 6+ years of experience to configure, develop, and support Calypso back office and accounting solutions across our capital markets technology estate. You will bring deep Calypso platform expertise combined with strong back office operations and financial accounting domain knowledge — delivering robust, accurate, and compliant settlement, reconciliation, and accounting solutions that support the organisation's capital markets trading and financial reporting objectives.

You will work closely with Back Office Operations, Finance, Risk, and Technology teams — translating complex settlement and accounting requirements into well-designed Calypso configurations and technical solutions that meet the highest standards of accuracy, auditability, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Calypso Back Office Configuration & Development

  • Design, configure, and maintain Calypso back office modules — settlement instructions, confirmation management, nostro reconciliation, and workflow configuration — aligned to business and operational requirements.
  • Configure and maintain Calypso settlement workflows — DvP, FoP, and cash settlement processes — across fixed income, FX, derivatives, equities, and repo asset classes.
  • Develop and maintain Calypso SWIFT interface configurations — MT103, MT202, MT515, MT540-543 — ensuring accurate, timely settlement message generation and processing.
  • Configure Calypso static data — counterparty, account, product, and SSI data — ensuring accurate, current reference data supports settlement and accounting processing.
  • Build and maintain Calypso batch processing workflows — scheduling, dependency management, and failure handling for end-of-day and intraday back office processing cycles.
  • Support Calypso platform upgrades — assessing back office and accounting module impact, updating configurations, and validating functional integrity across version transitions.
  • Develop Calypso customisations using Java — extending platform functionality for bespoke back office and accounting requirements not covered by standard configuration.

Calypso Accounting Configuration

  • Design and configure Calypso accounting frameworks — GL mapping rules, accounting event definitions, and posting logic for trade, settlement, accrual, amortisation, and corporate action events.
  • Configure P&L accounting — realised and unrealised gain / loss calculation, accrual accounting, and amortisation schedules across fixed income, derivatives, FX, and equity instrument types.
  • Implement multi-entity and multi-currency accounting configurations — ensuring accurate accounting treatment across legal entities, currencies, and jurisdictions.
  • Design and maintain sub-ledger to GL reconciliation processes — identifying and resolving accounting breaks between Calypso sub-ledger and general ledger systems.
  • Support IFRS 9 / IAS 39 accounting standard implementation — configuring classification, measurement, and hedge accounting treatments within Calypso where applicable.
  • Produce and validate accounting reports — balance sheet, P&L, and position reports — ensuring accuracy, completeness, and consistency with source trade and settlement data.

Integration & Data Management

  • Design and maintain Calypso interfaces — SWIFT, FIX, MQ, and XML-based integrations — connecting Calypso with custodians, CSDs, counterparties, and internal systems.
  • Develop SQL queries and PL/SQL procedures for data validation, reconciliation, and reporting across Calypso Oracle databases.
  • Build Python and Shell scripts for batch automation, data reconciliation, and operational support within the Calypso back office ecosystem.
  • Support nostro reconciliation break resolution — analysing settlement failures, identifying root causes, and coordinating resolution with operations and counterparty teams.

Stakeholder Engagement & Delivery

  • Collaborate with Back Office Operations, Finance, Risk, and Technology teams — translating business requirements into well-designed Calypso configurations and technical specifications.
  • Support UAT activities — producing test data, validating settlement and accounting outputs, and resolving functional defects identified during business testing.
  • Participate in Agile and waterfall delivery ceremonies — sprint planning, backlog refinement, and programme governance activities.
  • Produce and maintain high-quality technical documentation — configuration guides, accounting mapping documents, interface specifications, and operational runbooks.
  • Mentor and support junior Calypso developers and functional analysts — sharing back office and accounting domain expertise.
What We're Looking For
  • 6+ years of experience in Calypso platform configuration and development with deep expertise in back office and accounting modules in capital markets environments.
  • Strong Calypso back office expertise — settlement workflow configuration, SWIFT interface setup, nostro reconciliation, confirmation management, and static data management.
  • Deep Calypso accounting knowledge — GL mapping, accounting event configuration, P&L accounting, accrual / amortisation, and sub-ledger reconciliation.
  • Strong capital markets domain knowledge — financial instruments (fixed income, FX, derivatives, equities, repos), trade lifecycle, and back office operations.
  • Java development skills for Calypso customisation — extending platform functionality for bespoke business requirements.
  • Advanced SQL and PL/SQL skills — complex querying, stored procedures, and data validation across Oracle databases.
  • SWIFT messaging expertise — MT settlement message types, SWIFT Alliance configuration, and custodian connectivity.
  • Experience supporting Calypso upgrades and migrations — impact assessment, configuration updates, and validation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills — diagnosing settlement failures, accounting breaks, and interface issues under production pressure.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills — engaging back office operations, finance, risk, and technology teams effectively.
Nice to Have
  • Calypso collateral management module experience — margin call processing, collateral allocation, and dispute management.
  • Knowledge of regulatory reporting requirements — MiFID II, EMIR, APRA — and Calypso regulatory reporting configuration.
  • Familiarity with IFRS 9 / IAS 39 accounting standards and their Calypso implementation.
  • Experience with CSD / ICSD connectivity — Euroclear, Clearstream, DTC, or ASX Settlement.
  • Knowledge of securities lending, repo, and structured product settlement processes.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms — AWS or Azure — for Calypso infrastructure hosting and modernisation.
  • Calypso certification or formal Calypso training programme completion.
  • Experience in Investment Banking, Capital Markets, or Asset Management environments.
  • Familiarity with Australian market conventions — ASX, CHESS settlement, and APRA reporting requirements.
