Job Purpose
To design and engineer cable constructions that meet customer requirements, applicable national/international standards, and manufacturability norms, while providing accurate technical documentation (BOM, drawings, specifications) that serves as the base for production, quality, and costing functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret customer specifications, tender documents, and enquiries to determine cable construction requirements (voltage grade, current rating, application, environment).
- Design cable constructions including conductor sizing and stranding, insulation and sheathing type/thickness, screening, armoring, and overall cable layup.
- Select appropriate raw materials (conductor metal, insulation/sheathing compounds, armor materials) in line with technical and commercial feasibility.
- Perform electrical and mechanical calculations resistance, voltage drop, short-circuit rating, current carrying capacity, bending radius, etc.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant standards (IS, IEC, BS, UL, ASTM, customer-specific standards) and obtain/maintain product certifications.
- Prepare detailed Bill of Materials (BOM), construction data sheets, technical drawings, and specification sheets for new and existing products.
- Support new product development (NPD) — from concept design through prototype, type testing, and approval.
- Coordinate with production and quality teams to validate designs during trial runs and resolve manufacturability issues.
- Respond to technical queries from customers, sales team, and regulatory/certification bodies.
- Conduct or coordinate type tests and routine tests as required by standards and customer specifications.
- Maintain and update the technical database/library of standard designs, drawings, and specifications.
- Evaluate alternate/value-engineered designs (e.g., material substitution) in coordination with the costing team without compromising performance or compliance.
- Review and approve engineering change requests and maintain revision control of design documents.
Key Deliverables
- Bill of Materials (BOM) and construction/specification sheets for each cable design.
- Technical drawings and datasheets for customer approval and production reference.
- Type test reports and certification documentation.
- Design validation sign-off for new products and engineering changes.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical / Electronics / Mechanical Engineering (or related field).
- Sound knowledge of cable construction principles and relevant standards (IS, IEC, BS, UL, ASTM).
- Proficiency in electrical calculations and design software/tools (CAD, cable design calculation tools, MS Excel).
- Understanding of raw materials used in cable manufacturing (conductors, polymers/compounds, armoring materials).
- Strong analytical, technical documentation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to coordinate cross-functionally with production, quality, costing, and sales teams.
Experience
2–8 years of experience in cable design/engineering within a cable manufacturing environment (experience range may vary by seniority level — Junior/Senior/Lead Design Engineer).
Key Interfaces
- Internal: Costing Team, Production, Quality Assurance, Sales & Marketing, R&D.
- External: Customers, Testing/Certification Agencies, Raw Material Suppliers.
