We are seeking an experienced BMS Algorithm Development Engineer to design, develop, validate and productionize battery management system algorithms (SOC, SOH, SOE, thermal management, cell balancing and diagnostics). The role spans modeling, algorithm design (Matlab/Simulink), software prototyping, MIL/SIL/HIL validation, and close collaboration with BMS firmware, HW and battery cell teams.
Job Responsibilities
KEY DELIVERABLES OF THE ROLE
- Design and implement core BMS algorithms: SOC/SOH/SOE estimation, charge/discharge control, cell balancing strategies, thermal management, state predictions and health diagnostics.
- Build and validate battery models (equivalent-circuit models, ECM; and/or physics-based models) for cells and packs; perform parameter identification using lab and field data.
- Create simulations and prototype algorithms in Matlab/Simulink (Model-in-the-Loop), and transition to production code (C/C++ or embedded targets) via MBD/autocode where applicable.
- Run verification & validation campaigns: MIL / SIL / HIL testing, test plan definition, test automation and on-vehicle/in-lab validation.
- Work with firmware and hardware teams to integrate algorithms on target ECUs/MCUs; support calibration, tuning and field updates.
- Analyse field and cell test data; implement improvements, model updates and failure-mode detection logic (predictive diagnostics).
- Write and maintain algorithm requirements, specifications, documentation and safety artefacts consistent with automotive standards (ASPICE/ISO26262) where applicable.
- Support cross-functional activities: battery cell characterization, thermal design, system-level energy/power estimation, and manufacturing handover.
Required qualifications & experience
- B.Tech / M.Tech / MS in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Control Systems, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering or similar.
- 2–8 years (adjustable) hands‑on experience developing BMS algorithms (SOC/SOH/SOE, balancing, thermal).
- Strong experience with Matlab/Simulink for algorithm development, model parameterization and MBD workflows.
- Proficient in at least one production embedded language (C/C++); comfortable moving algorithms from Simulink to embedded code (autocode or manual implementation).
- Strong data analysis skills (Python, MATLAB, Pandas, NumPy) and experience with post-processing large battery test datasets.
- Solid understanding of battery electrochemistry and cell behavior (Li‑ion chemistries: NMC, NCA, LFP etc.), thermal effects and aging mechanisms.
- Experience with validation tools and environments (MIL/SIL/HIL, dSPACE, NI, Vector, CAN tools) and test automation.
Preferred / Nice-to-have
- Experience with ASPICE, ISO 26262 functional safety processes and documenting safety requirements.
- Experience with machine‑learning / data‑driven SOC/SOH methods and anomaly detection.
- Familiarity with battery pack design (cells, interconnects, fusing) and battery testing hardware (cyclers, environmental chambers).
- Exposure to cloud analytics, over‑the‑air (OTA) updates for BMS, or telematics integration.
- Hands‑on experience with specific MCU families used in BMS (ARM Cortex‑M, RL78, etc.) or with RTOS‑based embedded development.
- Tools & tech stack (commonly requested across postings)
- Matlab/Simulink, Simulink Coder / Embedded Coder, C/C++, Python, Pandas/NumPy, dSPACE/NI HIL, CANalyzer/CANoe, Git, JIRA, test automation frameworks, battery cyclers, thermal chambers.
