As part of the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) at American Express, the Associate Counsel in India contributes to the company’s dynamic and fast-developing business. This role generally supports the India International Consumer Services (ICS) business and related strategic tasks.

Key Responsibilities
  • Legal Support: Provide proactive legal advice on a broad range of issues related to American Express’ banking and credit card groups in India.
  • Regulatory Expertise: Demonstrate strong knowledge of India’s financial regulatory framework, especially in banking, credit cards, payments, and related industries.
  • Drafting and Negotiation: Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, product terms and conditions, and relevant legal documentation to support various commercial activities.
  • Strategic Advisory: Provide legal guidance on product development, marketing programs, and execution strategies.
  • Regulatory Awareness: Stay up to date on emerging legal and regulatory developments affecting banking, data privacy, payments, and IT-enabled services; provide analyses to help management navigate changes.
  • Collaboration and Influence: Build credibility with internal and external stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Qualified legal professional from a top law institute in India with at least 6+ years post-qualification experience.
  • Industry Experience: Prior experience in banking, NBFCs, payments, IT-enabled services (ITES), or credit card businesses is advantageous.
  • Legal Expertise: Strong knowledge of banking law, contract law, anti-money laundering law, data privacy, and information security frameworks.
  • Skills: Excellent drafting and negotiation abilities with the capability to explain complex legal concepts clearly to non-experts.
