Role & responsibilities
A. Project Phase Mechanical Engineering & Execution
- Lead all mechanical engineering activities during the greenfield project encompassing equipment erection, piping installation, mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, and commissioning.
- Review and approve mechanical engineering documents and drawings — equipment layout plans, piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), isometric drawings, general arrangement drawings, equipment datasheets, and mechanical specifications.
- Oversee the erection and alignment of rotating equipment — centrifugal and reciprocating pumps, compressors, blowers, agitators, mixers, conveyors, and material handling systems relevant to the battery materials process.
- Manage the installation of static mechanical equipment — pressure vessels, reactors, heat exchangers, storage tanks, columns, and jacketed equipment — in compliance with design specifications and relevant codes (ASME, IS 2825, IBR).
- Supervise piping fabrication, erection, and installation activities — including process piping, utility piping, slurry lines, and jacketed piping — ensuring compliance with piping specifications and material traceability requirements.
- Coordinate hydrostatic testing, pneumatic testing, and flushing of piping systems prior to commissioning.
- Manage mechanical contractor and EPC vendor performance on site — monitoring progress, resolving technical queries, certifying work completion, and enforcing HSE and quality standards.
- Conduct and coordinate Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) at vendor / OEM works for critical rotating and static equipment.
- Lead mechanical pre-commissioning activities — oil flushing, alignment checks, trial runs, no-load testing, and mechanical run-in of equipment.
- Ensure all mechanical installations comply with applicable codes, standards (ASME, IS, IBR, TEMA), and statutory requirements.
- Ensure quality control at site including execution and workmanship.
- Documentation, SOPs, job certification, and general site management.
B. Maintenance & Operations Phase — Reliability & Plant Mechanical Management
- Establish the plant's mechanical maintenance function from first principles — developing the maintenance strategy, team structure, work management systems, and maintenance philosophy ahead of plant commissioning.
- Design and implement a comprehensive Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) programme for all mechanical assets — rotating equipment, static equipment, piping systems, mechanical seals, cooling towers, HVAC, and utility systems.
- Build and maintain a mechanical asset register, equipment history database, critical spare parts inventory, and maintenance KPI dashboard.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for equipment failures — using structured methodologies (5-Why, Fishbone, FMEA) to identify root causes and implement permanent corrective actions.
- Implement condition monitoring programmes — vibration analysis, oil analysis, thermography, and ultrasonic testing — to shift from reactive to predictive maintenance practices.
- Plan and execute planned shutdowns and maintenance turnarounds — developing detailed scope, schedules, resource plans, and contractor packages for periodic plant outages.
- Manage mechanical seal, bearing, coupling, and critical spares inventory — ensuring optimal stock levels to support plant reliability without excessive working capital.
- Drive reliability-centred maintenance (RCM) initiatives, asset criticality assessments, and continuous improvement of equipment availability and MTBF.
- Manage contracts for mechanical maintenance services, AMC agreements, and OEM support for critical equipment.
C. Design Coordination & Technical Engineering
- Collaborate with EPCM / PMC consultants, process licensors, and mechanical design engineers during the detailed engineering phase — reviewing mechanical design basis, equipment sizing, and material selection.
- Provide technical inputs during equipment procurement — evaluating techno-commercial bids for pumps, compressors, agitators, heat exchangers, vessels, and conveyors.
- Review vendor documentation packages — mechanical datasheets, O&M manuals, lubrication schedules, and spare parts lists — for technical completeness.
- Participate in HAZOPs, mechanical risk reviews, and process safety assessments as the mechanical engineering representative.
- Develop mechanical operating procedures, equipment isolation procedures, and maintenance job safety analyses (JSAs) for the plant operations team.
- Evaluate design changes and modifications — assessing mechanical impact of MOCs (Management of Change) and ensuring safe implementation.
D. Quality Assurance & Statutory Compliance
- Implement and enforce the mechanical quality management plan — covering incoming equipment inspection, in-process installation checks, non-destructive testing (NDT), and final mechanical acceptance criteria.
- Ensure compliance with applicable mechanical codes and standards — ASME Section VIII (pressure vessels), B31.3 (process piping), IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations), IS 2825, and TEMA standards for heat exchangers.
- Coordinate third-party inspection agencies (TPI) for equipment manufacturing surveillance, pressure testing, and pre-commissioning inspections.
- Maintain mechanical quality records — weld inspection reports, material test certificates (MTCs), hydro-test records, NDT reports, and mechanical completion certificates.
- Manage statutory inspections for IBR-registered equipment, pressure vessels, and lifting equipment — coordinating with relevant authorities for approvals and periodic renewals.
E. Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Champion mechanical safety across all phases — enforcing safe isolation, lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work, and mechanical permit-to-work (PTW) procedures.
- Ensure all high-pressure and high-temperature mechanical systems are operated and maintained in strict accordance with applicable safety standards and operating limits.
- Participate in safety audits, pre-startup safety reviews (PSSRs), and incident investigations related to mechanical activities.
F. Team Leadership & Stakeholder Management
- Build, lead, and develop the mechanical engineering team — covering project execution staff, maintenance engineers, and technician teams — instilling a culture of technical excellence and accountability.
- Provide technical mentoring and structured development to junior mechanical engineers and supervisors.
- Prepare and present mechanical project progress reports, maintenance KPI dashboards, equipment reliability data, and shutdown status updates to senior management.
- Manage relationships with key external stakeholders — OEM vendors, inspection agencies, statutory authorities, and maintenance service contractors.
- Coordinate closely with process, electrical, instrumentation, civil, and piping teams on mechanical interfaces, utility requirements, and integrated commissioning activities.
