As a Technical Project Engineer, you will take ownership of control panel and switchgear projects from client design and specification through to production, testing and delivery. Reporting to the Projects Manager, with advisory support from the Engineering Manager, you will act as the key technical link between the client and our Engineering, Procurement and Production teams.
Your day-to-day focus is a combination of project management, technical engineering and client management, and you ensure that designs are practical, fit-for-purpose, commercially appropriate and suitable for manufacture.
A strong understanding of control panels, controls and LV switchgear is essential. This is not a purely design focussed role. Instead it’s an excellent opportunity for an Engineer who enjoys a combination of technical engineering, client interaction, project coordination and practical manufacturing.
The ideal candidate will have relevant industry experience e.g. previous work on data centre projects and associated building services and control systems. Experience with HVAC controls, BMS, networks and 2D CAD would be highly advantageous.
Key responsibilities
Technical Project Management
- Take technical ownership of assigned control panel projects from order through to completion.
- Manage projects from client drawings and specifications through post-Sales design development and adaptation, client approval, production, testing and delivery.
- Coordinate multiple projects, acting as the central link between clients and Engineering, Procurement, Production and Quality.
- Liaise with the Site team and coordinate technical requirements, queries and issues arising during project delivery and installation.
- Monitor progress and proactively address technical, programme, commercial or resource issues.
- Assist Sales in preparing and pricing project work, considering technical requirements, component selection, labour, materials and other project costs.
- Ensure project requirements, decisions, changes and approvals are clearly communicated and documented.
- Maintain accurate project documentation to ensure technical data is controlled and up to date.
- Drive projects forward and ensure outstanding actions are resolved promptly.
Client and Technical Coordination
- Produce accurate engineering Bills of Materials (BOMs) using relevant engineering and ERP tools.
- Prepare and maintain drawings, models, layouts, specifications and other technical documentation.
- Ensure engineering documentation is accurate, complete and maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure design changes and revisions are accurately reflected in all relevant documentation.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of standardised design libraries, templates, BOM structures and component databases.
- Prepare client-specific technical documentation as required.
Liaison with Production and Quality
- Act as the key technical point of contact for designated clients throughout the project lifecycle.
- Build effective relationships with client engineering and project teams, understanding their technical standards, specifications and preferred equipment.
- Liaise with the Site team to resolve technical queries and coordinate project requirements.
- Review client drawings, schematics, specifications and equipment schedules, identifying technical issues, omissions or impractical requirements.
- Respond to technical queries and requests for information, providing practical and commercially appropriate solutions.
- Discuss design changes and alternative solutions with clients and secure the required approvals.
- Lead technical meetings, client discussions and site visits as required.
Electrical Design and Engineering
- Review client schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts and technical documentation, applying a strong practical understanding of controls and switchgear.
- Interpret client-issued CAD documentation, and use 2D CAD to amend and update electrical drawings and layouts.
- Update drawings and technical documentation, working with Engineering where detailed design input is required.
- Identify design issues and specification conflicts and develop practical, manufacturable solutions.
- Identify and evaluate alternative components where specified equipment is unavailable, unsuitable or commercially impractical.
- Resolve technical issues as they arise, applying a practical understanding of control systems and associated building services, including HVAC controls, BMS and networked control systems.
- Ensure solutions meet project requirements and applicable standards, including where designs need to be adapted for different standards or markets.
- Ensure approved technical changes are accurately reflected in project documentation.
- Promote practical, standardised and efficient solutions where appropriate.
Procurement and Commercial Considerations
- Support the pricing of jobs and technical variations, providing input on materials, components, labour requirements and other technical cost considerations.
- Work with Procurement to confirm component availability, lead times, suitability and cost.
- Consider cost, availability and lead time when developing technical solutions.
- Balance technical requirements, client expectations, Production schedule and budget when recommending solutions.
Production and Testing Support
- Maintain technical ownership as projects progress into Production.
- Ensure Production has the correct, approved drawings, specifications, BoMs and technical data.
- Provide technical support throughout panel manufacture, wiring and assembly, resolving queries and production issues as required.
- Manage technical changes arising during manufacture and ensure they are appropriately approved and documented.
- Support the investigation and resolution of production and testing issues and non-conformances.
- Support FAT preparation, testing and client inspections, coordinating the resolution of outstanding technical issues.
- Where required, liaise with site and commissioning teams to support the resolution of technical issues during installation, commissioning and project handover.
Project Closeout
- Manage outstanding client comments and technical actions through to closure.
- Support final project sign-off and handover.
- Ensure final drawings, as-built documentation, manuals and other technical deliverables are completed and issued.
- Ensure production changes are accurately reflected in final documentation.
- Conduct post-project reviews and identify opportunities for improved processes, standardisation and project efficiency.
Quality, Health & Safety and Compliance
- Carry out all activities safely, following company procedures and quality policies, risk assessments, safe working practices and industry standards.
- Maintain awareness of the hazards associated with control panels and LV switchgear.
- Use tools, equipment and PPE correctly and ensure they are maintained in good condition.
- Stop work and immediately report any unsafe conditions, defects or potential risks.
- Keep your work area clean, organised and safe, taking a “clean as you go” approach.
- Where required, ensure that all health & safety documentation is in the place for project delivery.
General
- Maintain awareness of industry trends, health & safety requirements and the International (IEC), British (BS), European (EN) and other standards that apply to our business.
- Maintain awareness of developments and requirements within the data centre sector, particularly in relation to LV switchgear, control panels, BMS, HVAC controls and networked systems.

Requirements
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related field (or equivalent industry experience).
- 3-5 years’ experience in electrical engineering, control panels, switchgear, electrical manufacturing or a similar environment.
- Practical knowledge of LV switchgear and control panels.
- Experience in coordinating technical activities across multiple projects, incl. budgeting, scheduling and client management.
- Knowledge of some or all of the following would be a distinct advantage: Data centre project experience; 2D CAD; HVAC controls; BMS; industrial/building control networks and communications; project pricing and cost estimation.
- Strong ability to interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.
- Solid understanding of electrical standards, specifications and engineering documentation.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Practical and manufacturing-focused, understanding how designs translate into physical panels.
- Familiarity with project management software (e.g., MS Project, Smartsheet or equivalent).
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

- Full driving licence, fluency in English and eligible to work in Ireland.
