Job summary

Capital Switchgear Limited is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead mechanical design activities for LV switchgear and control panel projects. You’ll create manufacturing-ready 3D models and layouts, interpret client specifications, and develop documentation from concept through completion, while ensuring compliance with IEC/BS/EN standards and project requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 2–6 years’ relevant experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
  • Experience producing 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Good understanding of LV switchgear and control panel construction.
  • Good understanding of mechanical design principles and design for manufacture.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical information.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a practical approach to engineering challenges.
  • Ability to manage own workload, prioritise tasks and meet project deadlines.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work effectively with Engineering, Projects, Production and Quality teams.
  • Eligible to work in Ireland.

Responsibilities

  • Create and deliver mechanical designs for LV switchgear and control panel projects from initial concept through to completion.
  • Develop detailed 3D models, manufacturing drawings, layouts and associated design documentation.
  • Interpret customer specifications, drawings and technical requirements and translate these into practical, manufacturing-ready designs.
  • Design enclosure structures, mounting arrangements, internal layouts and associated mechanical components.
  • Apply design for manufacture principles to ensure designs are practical, efficient and suitable for production and assembly.
  • Consider structural integrity, accessibility, ventilation, thermal performance and maintainability throughout the design process.
  • Identify and resolve mechanical design issues, making appropriate revisions where required.
  • Apply relevant IEC, BS, EN and other applicable standards and regulations to mechanical designs.
  • Produce accurate engineering Bills of Materials (BOMs) using relevant engineering and ERP tools.
  • Prepare and maintain drawings, models, layouts, specifications and other technical documentation.
  • Ensure engineering documentation is accurate, complete and maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure design changes and revisions are accurately reflected in all relevant documentation.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of standardised design libraries, templates, BOM structures and component databases.
  • Prepare client-specific technical documentation as required.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you play an important role in the design and delivery of LV switchgear and control panel projects at Capital Switchgear. Working as part of the Engineering team and linking closely with Projects, Production and Quality, you will develop practical, manufacturing-ready mechanical designs from initial concept through to completion.

You will take ownership of assigned design activities, ensuring high-quality deliverables, resolving technical issues and supporting successful project delivery. This role is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious Engineer to develop their technical expertise within a specialist electrical manufacturing environment.

Key responsibilities
Mechanical Design and Engineering
  • Create and deliver mechanical designs for LV switchgear and control panel projects from initial concept through to completion.

Liaison with Production and Quality
  • Work closely with Mechanical and Electrical Production teams to ensure designs are practical, accurate and manufactured in accordance with specifications.
  • Support the transition of designs from Engineering into Production.
  • Provide technical support during manufacture, assembly and testing.
  • Investigate and resolve design and manufacturing issues in collaboration with relevant teams.
  • Support mechanical testing, validation and FAT activities as required.
  • Analyse test results and identify opportunities to improve product performance, reliability and manufacturability.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions relating to product or manufacturing challenges.
  • Raise and investigate concerns if materials, workmanship, output or designs do not meet the required standard – always ask the question.
Liaison with Project Managers and Clients
  • Work closely with the assigned Project Manager to ensure that mechanical engineering deliverables meet client requirements and agreed timelines.
  • Provide regular updates on design progress, technical issues and potential project risks.
  • Respond to technical queries and provide appropriate engineering support to the Projects team.
  • Participate in technical meetings with clients, suppliers and other stakeholders as required.
  • Attend meetings as needed to provide technical input and build positive, professional relationships with clients.
  • Identify and communicate potential issues at an early stage to support successful project delivery.
Health and Safety
  • Carry out all Engineering activities safely, following Company procedures, safety controls, risk assessments and safe working practices.
  • Consider Health & Safety throughout the design process, ensuring products are designed with safety and compliance at their core.
  • Maintain an awareness of the hazards associated with electrical switchgear products.
  • Use tools, equipment, PPE and manual handling techniques correctly and only undertake moving/lifting activities for which you have been trained and authorised.
  • Stop work and immediately report any unsafe conditions, defects or potential risks.
  • Keep your work area clean, organised and safe, taking a “clean as you go” approach.
  • Report unsafe conditions, damaged goods, equipment defects or other potential risks immediately.
Continuous Improvement and Industry Awareness
  • Identify opportunities to improve product design, manufacturability, project delivery and engineering efficiency.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of engineering processes, systems and design standards.
  • Support the development of standardised and repeatable design solutions.
  • Maintain awareness of industry developments, Health & Safety requirements and applicable International (IEC), British (BS), European (EN) and other standards relevant to the business.

Nice to Have
  • Previous work experience in switchgear, electrical, power or related manufacturing industries.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Revit or similar CAD software.
  • Knowledge of IEC, BS, EN or other relevant engineering standards.
  • Understanding of sheet metal fabrication, manufacturing processes and mechanical assembly.
  • Experience supporting FAT, testing or production activities.
  • Experience working with engineering BOMs, standardised components and design libraries.
  • Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project or Smartsheet.
  • Based primarily on site in our factory in Rathcoole, Co Dublin.
  • Working hours are 07:30-16:30 Mon-Thurs and 07:30-13:30 Fri.
  • Salary €45,000-€62,000, negotiable depending on experience & interview.
