Provide safe, effective and evidence-based nursing care within the limits of professional competence, in accordance with hospital policies, NMBI standards, legal requirements and ethical principles.
Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients’ physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, develop and deliver appropriate care plans, evaluate outcomes and support patients and families throughout diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and discharge.
Coordinate and support the safe administration of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) in collaboration with the Oncology NCHD, strictly adhering to approved protocols, medication safety procedures, infection prevention and risk management standards.
Provide specialist oncology advice, education and support to patients, relatives and healthcare staff, including counselling, health education and guidance throughout the patient’s treatment and ongoing care.
Exercise appropriate clinical judgement and decision-making, respond promptly and effectively to emergency situations, and refer patients to medical staff or other healthcare professionals when required.
Maintain accurate, complete and confidential patient records and clinical documentation, and communicate relevant patient information clearly with nursing, medical and multidisciplinary teams.
Establish effective communication and coordination with Consultants, General Practitioners, Public Health Nurses, Palliative Care teams and other healthcare professionals, including providing telephone outreach support to patients following discharge.
Promote a safe clinical environment by adhering to Health and Safety, Infection Prevention and Control, SACT handling and disposal, risk management and incident reporting procedures.
Contribute to quality improvement and best practice initiatives by participating in quality monitoring, reviewing and implementing updated practices, supporting policy changes and collaborating with the Quality and Risk team.
Maintain ongoing professional development and specialist oncology knowledge through current literature, education, seminars and training, while supporting staff orientation, mentoring and in-service education as required.
Registered General Nurse with current registration on the NMBI live register.
A recognised Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or equivalent nursing qualification.
Post-registration qualification in Oncology/Cancer Nursing is desirable and may be required for specialist oncology positions.
Relevant post-registration clinical experience in oncology, preferably in an acute hospital setting.
Knowledge and experience in the administration and management of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) is highly desirable.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification may be required depending on the hospital and clinical area.
Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in oncology/cancer care.
Good knowledge of chemotherapy/SACT safety, infection prevention and control, medication management and patient safety.
Excellent communication and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
