Job summary

BD is seeking an experienced R&D Staff Engineer to join our Pharmaceutical Systems team in Dublin, Ireland. You will apply expertise in wearable infusion pumps and drug-delivery devices across the full product lifecycle.

Lead design, verification, risk assessments, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative, compliant medical devices for biologics and biosimilars.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical/Mechanical/Electromechanical engineering or related field.
  • Progressive experience in medical device R&D or regulated engineering environments.
  • Experience leading product development from concept to commercialization.
  • Strong knowledge of design controls, V&V, risk management and regulatory requirements.
  • Hands-on DOE/DFSS/DFM methods to optimize performance and manufacturability.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design, development, testing, and optimization of medical devices from concept through commercialization.
  • Drive design verification, validation, feasibility studies, risk assessments, and design controls.
  • Develop practical solutions for materials, mechanical design, manufacturability, and product performance.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, regulatory, manufacturing, and commercial teams to define requirements.
  • Apply DFSS, DFM, DOE to support robust product development.
  • Generate and maintain engineering documentation and design history records.
  • Contribute to IP activities, including invention disclosures and patent applications.
  • Coach and mentor junior engineers with technical guidance.

Job Description

BD is looking for an experienced R&D Staff Engineer to join our Pharmaceutical Systems team in Dublin, Ireland. This is an opportunity to apply your expertise in wearable infusion pumps, large-volume injection devices, or related drug delivery technologies to the development and commercialization of innovative combination products that support the delivery of biologics and biosimilars. You will join a multidisciplinary R&D team developing drug-delivery devices in partnership with pharmaceutical companies. The team supports a diverse portfolio of programs, including OBI Evolve, a wearable drug delivery platform currently in commercialization, as well as next-generation wearable and pen‑device technologies. This role offers exposure across the full product lifecycle, from early concept development and feasibility studies through design verification, validation, product improvements, regulatory updates, and commercial launch activities. As a technical expert and individual contributor, you will play an important role in advancing innovative, user‑focused solutions while supporting the growth and development of fellow engineers.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, development, testing, and optimization of medical devices and combination products from concept through commercialization.
  • Drive design verification, validation, feasibility studies, risk assessments, and design control activities within a regulated environment.
  • Develop practical solutions to complex engineering challenges involving materials, mechanical design, manufacturability, and product performance.
  • Partner with engineering, quality, regulatory, manufacturing, and commercial teams to define requirements and support successful product launches.
  • Apply Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Manufacture (DFM), statistical methods, and Design of Experiments (DOE) to support robust product development.
  • Generate and maintain engineering documentation, including specifications, protocols, reports, and design history records.
  • Contribute to intellectual property activities, including invention disclosures and patent applications.
  • Coach and support junior engineers through technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and mentoring.
Preferred Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline; Master's degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience in medical device research and development or another highly regulated engineering environment.
  • Proven success leading complex product development programs from concept through commercialization.
  • Strong knowledge of design controls, verification and validation, risk management, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with CAD tools and tolerance analysis; SolidWorks experience is advantageous.
  • Hands‑on expertise in Design of Experiments (DOE), DFSS, and DFM, with a track record of applying these methods to optimize product performance and manufacturability.
