Job summary

RED is a Dublin-based M&E consultancy expanding internationally, seeking a Senior Power Systems Engineer to join the team. The role focuses on power-system simulations, protective coordination, and design support for data centre projects.

Key tasks include load-flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, and harmonic studies, plus collaboration with design teams and clients. Hybrid working and a comprehensive benefits package are offered, with preference for candidates eligible to work in Ireland.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Power Engineering.
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Proficiency in ETAP, DigSilent, or SKM.
  • Experience with Load Flow, Short Circuit, Protection, Arc Flash, Harmonics, and Cable Sizing.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct load flow analysis to optimize power distribution for data centres.
  • Perform short‑circuit analysis to assess system integrity during faults.
  • Coordinate protection systems for reliability and safety.
  • Execute arc‑flash studies to mitigate risk and ensure safety.
  • Carry out MV and LV cable sizing per IEC standards.
  • Set unit protection settings for transformers, generators, motors, feeders, and transmission systems.
  • Perform harmonic studies to minimize power quality issues.

Job description

RED is an expanding international M&E consultancy focused on low‑energy design and zero‑carbon built environments.

We are looking for a Senior Power Systems Engineer to join our Dublin office.

Key Responsibilities
  • Simulation Expertise
    • Conduct load flow analysis to ensure optimal power distribution within data centre facilities.
    • Perform short‑circuit analysis to assess system integrity during fault conditions.
    • Coordinate protection systems to enhance reliability and safety of the power distribution network.
    • Execute arc‑flash studies to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with safety standards.
    • Conduct MV and LV cable sizing studies with relevant IEC standards.
    • Calculate underground raceway system and cable temperature.
    • Set unit protection settings for transformers, generators, motors, feeders, and transmission/distribution systems according to project requirements and applicable standards.
    • Perform harmonic studies to minimize power‑quality issues and optimise system performance.
  • Collaborative Design Support
    • Collaborate closely with design teams to understand project requirements.
    • Review and respond to RFIs and technical queries.
    • Liaise with the client, actively participate in meetings, and communicate requirements and feedback to the internal design team.
  • Transient Studies
    • Calculate transformer inrush current.
    • Experience in transient stability studies is an advantage.
  • Documentation & Reporting
    • Validate input data to ensure accuracy and reliability in simulation results.
    • Prepare comprehensive reports detailing simulation results, recommendations, and design considerations.
    • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date documentation related to power system simulations and design support activities.
    • Prepare, review, and approve technical specifications for electrical equipment, including transformers, switchgear, cables, protection relays, UPS systems, generators, and ancillary equipment.
  • Continuous Professional Development
    • Stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies.
    • Contribute to continuous improvement of simulation methodologies and tools within the power systems team.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Power Engineering.
  • Proven experience in power systems engineering, preferably within the data centre industry.
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Proficiency in simulation software—ETAP (preferred), DigSilent, or SKM.
  • Experience with Load Flow, Short Circuit Analysis, Protection Coordination, Arc Flash, Harmonic Studies, and Underground / Aboveground Cable Sizing.
  • Experience performing Transient Stability Studies desirable.
  • Experience performing Earthing Studies desirable.
  • Experience performing unit protection settings desirable.
  • Deep understanding of the models of main electrical machines (generators, transformers, motors, UPS).
  • Experience in both LV and MV systems, ideally HV up to 132 kV.
  • Strong knowledge of power systems control and SCADA systems.
  • Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Background in consulting or construction preferred.
  • Good understanding of international working and business operations of a global consultancy.
  • Act in an ethical manner and follow the principles of the Ethics Charter and Ethics in Practice Guidelines of the Group.
