Job description

About Ethos

Ethos is a collaborative team of engineers, consultants, and creative thinkers designing and delivering data centre and energy infrastructure across the world's most dynamic markets. As a multidisciplinary consultancy, we combine technical expertise, creativity, and integrated delivery to lead complex, mission-critical projects.

Built on strong relationships, clear leadership, and a can-do mindset, Ethos is entering an exciting phase of growth, expanding our capabilities and taking on increasingly high-impact projects across EMEA and beyond.

Sustainability guides how we design, collaborate, and deliver, creating innovative solutions and lasting value for our clients and communities — making Performance Made Possible.

About the Job

Ethos is seeking a Power Systems Engineer to join our expanding Data Centre Group, supporting the design and delivery of resilient electrical infrastructure for some of the world's most advanced mission‑critical facilities.

Working within multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will provide specialist expertise in power system modelling, analysis and electrical network design, ensuring the highest levels of reliability, resilience and operational performance across large-scale data centre developments.

A key aspect of this role is the development of digital power system models using ETAP, undertaking detailed network analysis to inform design decisions from concept through to commissioning. You will work closely with electrical, mechanical, BIM, commissioning and project delivery teams to develop technically robust solutions that comply with international standards and meet demanding client requirements.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop detailed ETAP models for complex electrical distribution networks.
  • Support the design of resilient MV and LV distribution systems for mission‑critical facilities.
  • Develop single line diagrams, network schematics and protection philosophies.
  • Produce detailed engineering calculations and technical reports.
  • Review protection settings and coordinate relay philosophies.
  • Assist with utility interface studies and grid connection assessments.
  • Review vendor ETAP models and manufacturer data for technical compliance.
  • Validate electrical equipment ratings against calculated system duties.
  • Collaborate with BIM teams to ensure coordination between physical layouts and electrical system models.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and energisation planning.
  • Assist commissioning teams by validating power system performance against ETAP simulations.
  • Contribute to QA processes by reviewing technical calculations, reports and design deliverables.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency through standardisation and digital engineering tools.
  • Support the development of internal ETAP standards, templates and modelling procedures.
  • Mentor graduate and junior engineers in power systems analysis and ETAP modelling.
  • Liaise with clients, utilities, contractors and equipment manufacturers to resolve technical issues throughout project delivery.

Perform electrical power system studies including:

  • Load flow analysis
  • IEC 60909 short circuit studies
  • Protection coordination
  • Selectivity analysis
  • Arc flash studies
  • Harmonic analysis
  • Motor starting studies
  • Voltage drop calculations
  • Equipment duty assessments
  • Generator performance studies
  • Contingency and resilience analysis
Desirable Experience
  • ETAP Certified Professional (or working towards certification).
  • Experience with DIgSILENT PowerFactory or SKM Power Tools.
  • Experience of large‑scale hyperscale data centre developments.
  • Knowledge of IEC 61850 and digital substations.
  • Understanding of grid code requirements and utility connection processes.
  • Experience with renewable generation, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) or microgrid studies.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration with Engineers Ireland, IET or an equivalent institution.
About You
Experience & Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 1+ years' experience in electrical or power systems engineering within a building services consultancy, engineering consultancy or industrial environment.
  • Experience delivering projects within data centres, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, healthcare, industrial or other mission‑critical facilities is highly desirable.
  • Good understanding of European and UK electrical standards including IEC, BS, IS and EN standards.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution systems from HV through MV and LV.
Power Systems & ETAP Experience

Experience using ETAP (or equivalent software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory or SKM) for:

  • Development of complete electrical network models.
  • Load flow analysis.

  • Power quality assessments.
  • Transient and dynamic system studies.
  • Contingency and network reliability analysis.
  • Equipment duty verification.
  • Generator and UPS performance analysis.
  • Cable ampacity and derating studies.

Experience creating and maintaining ETAP digital models throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring alignment with design revisions and as-built information, would be highly advantageous.

Technical Skills

Experience designing or reviewing:

  • HV, MV and LV distribution systems.
  • Primary and secondary substations.
  • Transformers.
  • Switchgear.
  • Busbar systems.
