Job summary

WSP is seeking a Senior Engineering Leader to provide leadership across transmission projects in Ireland. You will support development, review, construction, pre-commissioning and commissioning of high‑voltage assets, acting as a technical assurance interface with clients.

You will review designs, manage technical queries, provide direction throughout the project lifecycle, and mentor junior engineers while maintaining high quality standards across substations, HV cables and overhead lines.

Qualifications

• Degree in relevant Engineering Discipline.
• Strong transmission substations knowledge including 110 kV, 220 kV and 400 kV.
• Experience across substations, overhead lines and cables and knowledge of relevant standards.
• Ability to review designs, construction activity and commissioning against requirements.

A little more about your role…

Provide senior engineering leadership across transmission projects, supporting the development, review, construction, pre-commissioning and commissioning of high-voltage assets. The role acts as a technical assurance interface between project teams and our clients.

A core purpose of the role is to review and challenge designs, manage technical queries, support specification development, and provide clear technical direction throughout the project lifecycle. The successful candidate will bring strong transmission engineering judgement across substations, HV cables and overhead lines, together with the ability to influence delivery teams and maintain consistently high standards across projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and assess detailed designs against functional requirements, standard designs, client specifications, and relevant national and international standards.
• Review functional and technical specifications.
• Manage technical queries through the project lifecycle, ensuring issues are resolved efficiently, documented appropriately, and aligned with applicable standards and policies.
• Undertake site inspection and monitoring of construction progress to confirm works are being delivered in accordance with approved designs and standards.
• Undertake pre-commissioning and commissioning inspections to confirm transmission system requirements have been satisfied before tests proceed.
• Represent clients in project reviews, technical assessments, audits, factory acceptance tests and approval forums, if required.

Knowledge Skills and Experience

• Degree in relevant Engineering Discipline.
• Strong technical knowledge of transmission substations, including experience assessing onshore substation designs for compliance at 110 kV, 220 kV and 400 kV.
• Experience across substation, overhead line and cables, including working knowledge of relevant standards.
• Ability to assess project designs, construction activity and commissioning phases against functional, technical, operational and safety requirements.
• Experience carrying out site inspections and monitoring construction, pre-commissioning and commissioning activities for transmission assets.
• Understanding of design deliverables such as single line diagrams, substation layouts, protection schematics and interlocking documentation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical issues clearly and produce high-quality reports.
• Proven ability to track key tasks, take ownership of technical deliverables, influence stakeholders and work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to coach or mentor colleagues and provide technical support to junior team members.
