Job description

Senior Data Engineer – contract – Public Sector

We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer / Technical Lead to provide technical expertise and oversight for a major analytics migration programme, moving workloads from on-premises analytics platforms to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with a focus on BigQuery.

Role and Responsibilities

• Provide technical expertise and oversight across the migration of analytics workloads from on-premises platforms to GCP BigQuery.
• Work closely with business teams to understand requirements and coordinate technical support throughout the migration process.
• Design and implement appropriate testing and validation strategies for migrated workloads.
• Create functional design specifications, technical documentation
• Conduct code reviews
• Mentor and coach junior team members and provide technical guidance to intermediate-level engineers.
• Support Project Managers with planning, delivery, reporting and technical coordination.
• Contribute to project governance, status reporting
• Identify, assess and report technical risks that could impact project delivery.
• Manage technical issues and risks affecting the project.
• Investigate and prioritise live incidents, perform root cause analysis and recommend permanent fixes or appropriate workarounds.

What you need

• Extensive experience in Data Engineering.
• Strong experience with cloud-based data technologies and/or large-scale migration of data and associated systems to the cloud.
• Experience with GCP and BigQuery would be highly advantageous.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools and techniques.
• Strong understanding of systems architecture and database technologies.
• Experience working with relational databases such as SQL and Ingres, as well as NoSQL technologies/frameworks such as Hadoop.
• Experience working with structured and semi-structured data including XML, JSON and text files.
• Strong requirements gathering and Business Analysis capabilities, with the ability to translate business requirements into technical requirements.
• Strong technical solution design skills and the ability to select the appropriate technologies to meet defined requirements.
