Job summary

BS&B Innovations is seeking an R&D Engineer in Limerick, Ireland. You will design and develop pressure safety devices, manage prototyping, testing, and validation, and ensure conformance to standards and project milestones.

The role requires hands-on design work, documentation, and collaboration with manufacturing and QA to support product launches and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Honors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics (2.2 or higher).
  • Proficient in AutoCAD; 2D/3D modelling experience.
  • Familiar with Finite Element analysis; Ansys experience preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Project; PC literate in MS Office.
  • Knowledge of electronic instrumentation in modern manufacturing environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop new pressure safety devices and related products.
  • Lead prototype manufacture and testing; validate performance against objectives.
  • Plan development from concept to prototype to validation and launch.
  • Prepare documentation for manufacturing, quality, and compliance.

Job Title: R&D Engineer

Company: BS&B Innovations

Location: Limerick, Ireland

Reports To: R&D Manager

The Role

The R&D Engineer is responsible for design and / or development of new pressure safety management relief devices such as rupture disks, explosion vents, flame arresters and tank vents, relief valves, buckling pin valves, and safety head products. The position is a combination of design research, prototype manufacture, performance test validation and relevant certification practical testing of new products. The R&D Engineer will be responsible for the project management and timely delivery of projects assigned which includes archiving of research and development steps along with the creation of manufacturing and quality support documentation.

Utilising his/her creative abilities to develop & study design concepts and to meet requirements outlined on a project basis. Project duties shall include technology assessment, unit cost estimation, technical risk assessment, ease of manufacture assessment and functionality assessment.

Define outline of project requirements and plan development process from concept to prototype to validation and launch. Define development and validation requirements including resource / equipment / time / materials / technical code conformance requirements / ongoing quality assurance requirements / attention to sustainability.

Carry out detailed design of product and necessary tooling utilising AutoCAD and preferably FEA software. Complete design package in accordance with BS&B company procedures.

Manufacture prototype units and prototype/production tooling using internal and sub-contract vendors. Liaise with vendors to supply components and tooling within budget and on time.

Carry out validation of new designs in accordance with BS&B R&D procedures. Design, build and test product to validate performance against project objectives.

Maintain detailed record of work undertaken; lab notebook or electronic equivalent.

Prepare periodic status reports as required by management. Monitor and report on project cost and resource consumption. Call design reviews with management when necessary to review means of achieving project objectives as a minimum at the following stages;

  • Design concept study completion
  • Prototype performance evaluation
  • Pre Validation
  • Post Validation

Oversee technical launch and production of new product. Prepare production, tooling and quality documentation associated with product launch and production. Prepare compliance packages to international standards and oversee necessary code compliance. Provide training to production, engineering and quality on new product for appropriate affiliate companies.

Manage and carry out special tasks as assigned by R&D Manager.

Essential Requirements:

Education:

  • Honors Degree Course in Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics - 2.2 or higher achieved.
  • AutoCAD R13 or R14 in 2-D and 3-D. Solid modelling an advantage.
  • Familiar with Finite Element analysis and ideally proficient in use of Ansys FEA for non-linear analysis.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Project for Windows.
  • PC Literate in Win 365 (or later revision), Excel, Word, and Access.
  • Knowledge of electronic instrumentation and systems as applied in a modern manufacturing environment.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years' experience of component design in industry.
  • Machine, tooling and system design would be an advantage.
  • Experience with processing methods for metals and plastics an advantage.
  • Proficient in use of machine shop equipment for manufacture of tooling and prototype parts including the use of 3D printing to fast-track activity.
  • Track record of project completion including implementation of production phase within specifications.
  • Experience in Research environment an advantage.
