Job summary

The Ireland Roads team at WSP is seeking a Principal Engineer with extensive post‑qualification experience to lead design and project management of road, public transport and active travel schemes. Based in Dublin, Limerick or Naas, you will guide concept through detailed design for major national schemes and coordinate multidisciplinary teams.

You will develop staff, manage budgets and fee proposals, ensure health and safety compliance, and build trusted client relationships with authorities

Qualifications

  • Project management and technical delivery lead experience of road, public transport or active travel schemes.
  • Experience with contract preparation or administration using Public Works Contracts.
  • Excellent communication, client management and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of design standards (Urban Street, Active Travel, Highway Geometrics).
  • Strong stakeholder management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Manage projects ensuring coordination of multi-disciplinary inputs.
  • Liaise with clients and manage their expectations.
  • Serve as project technical lead and reviewer.
  • Develop and mentor staff.
  • Prepare fee proposals and manage project budgets.
  • Deliver discrete and overall project solutions and designs.
  • Lead delivery of design drawings, specs and bill of quantities.

Job description

Role Overview

The Ireland Roads team is seeking a Principal Engineer with extensive post professional qualification experience in the design and project management of road schemes and active travel schemes. This role is based in Dublin, Limerick or Naas and will lead and help grow a team undertaking concept, preliminary and detailed designs for major national road schemes, public transport schemes and active travel schemes for the National Transport Authority and Local Authorities.

Responsibilities
  • Managing projects to ensure coordination and compatibility of multi‑disciplinary inputs on projects of varying scale, complexity and value.
  • Liaising with clients, developing strong trusted relationships, proactively managing their expectations and comprehensively advising them.
  • Undertake project technical lead and reviewer roles.
  • Using technical ability and experience to develop staff.
  • Prepare fee proposals and manage budgets for individual projects.
  • Be responsible for the development and delivery of discrete and overall project solutions.
  • Lead and manage other staff members in the delivery of design drawings, standard construction details, specifications and bill of quantities, supporting the preparation of tender packages.
  • Responsible for compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation and in‑house quality assurance standards/processes.
Qualifications
  • Project management and technical delivery lead experience of Road or Public Transport/Active Travel schemes, with knowledge of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, National Transport Authority or Local Authority procedures.
  • Experience of contract document preparation or contract administration/site supervision using Public Works Contracts.
  • A chartered member of a relevant engineering technical institution.
  • Experience or knowledge of alignment and drainage design software packages such as Civil3D/Open Roads and WinDes is preferred but not essential.
  • Excellent communication, client management and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent IT skills including MS Projects.
  • Thorough understanding and application of current design standards (e.g. Urban Street and/or Active Travel Design, Highway Geometric Design, TII and NTA Project Management Guidelines).
  • Strong stakeholder management experience.
