Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking an Assistant Engineer to join the Ireland Roads team in Limerick. This role involves leading the design and project management of major national road and active travel schemes, ensuring successful project delivery and client management.

Qualifications

Job description

About the Role

The Ireland Roads team is seeking an Assistant Engineer with relevant post‑qualification experience in the design and project management of road schemes and active travel schemes to work in our Limerick (N/M20 Project office). The role involves leading and helping grow a team undertaking concept, preliminary and detailed designs for major national road schemes including the N/M20 Cork to Limerick Project, Public Transport schemes (including Cork BusConnects and Metrolink) and active travel schemes for the National Transport Authority and Local Authorities.

Responsibilities
  • Managing projects to ensure coordination and compatibility of multi‑disciplinary inputs on projects of varying scale, complexity and value.
  • Liaising with clients, developing strong trusted relationships, proactively managing their expectations and comprehensively advising them.
  • Undertaking project technical lead and reviewer roles.
  • Using technical ability and experience to develop staff.
  • Preparing fee proposals and managing budgets for individual projects.
  • Being responsible for the development and delivery of discrete and overall project solutions.
  • Leading and managing other staff members in the delivery of design drawings, standard construction details, specifications and bill of quantities, supporting preparation of tender packages.
  • Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental legislation and in‑house quality assurance standards/processes.
Qualifications
  • Project management and technical delivery lead experience of Road or Public Transport/Active Travel schemes, with experience of Transport Infrastructure Ireland/National Transport Authority/Local Authority procedures essential.
  • Experience of contract document preparation or contract administration/site supervision using Public Works Contracts.
  • A chartered member of a relevant engineering technical institution.
  • Experience or knowledge of alignment and drainage design software packages such as Civil3D/Open Roads and WinDes preferred, but not essential.
  • Excellent communication, client management and interpersonal skills essential.
  • Excellent IT skills including MS Project.
  • A thorough understanding and application of current design standards including Urban Street and/or Active Travel Design (e.g. Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets – DMURS, The Traffic Signs Manual, the Cycle Design Manual, etc.), Highway Geometric Design (e.g. Transport Infrastructure Ireland publications) and TII and NTA Project Management Guidelines.
  • Strong stakeholder management experience.
