Job summary

AECOM in Dublin is seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical building services design across a diverse portfolio including healthcare, education, transport and data centres. You’ll drive technical excellence, mentor junior engineers, and coordinate with electrical, civil and architectural teams to deliver high‑performing, sustainable solutions.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or related field.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or pursuing chartership with Engineers Ireland.
  • Extensive experience in design and delivery of mechanical building services.
  • Proven track record leading multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Strong HVAC, public health engineering, heating/cooling, and low-carbon tech expertise.
  • Experience delivering projects across multiple sectors.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design and delivery of major building services projects.
  • Provide technical leadership ensuring designs meet standards.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams with electrical, structural, civil, architectural, and specialist engineering disciplines.
  • Develop energy‑efficient, low‑carbon mechanical engineering solutions.
  • Build and maintain client relationships as trusted technical advisor.
  • Manage project schedules, resources, budgets, and commercial performance.
  • Review and approve calculations, reports, specifications, and design documentation.
  • Mentor and support development of junior engineers.
  • Support business development with proposals and client presentations.
  • Promote engineering excellence and best practices.

AECOM is looking for an experienced and ambitious Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our expanding Buildings + Engineering team in Dublin. This is an excellent opportunity to take a leadership role in delivering innovative mechanical building services solutions across a diverse portfolio of projects, including healthcare facilities, education campuses, railway stations, and mission‑critical data centres.

As part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team, you will lead the design and delivery of complex engineering projects while working closely with clients, architects, contractors, and industry stakeholders. You'll play a key role in developing sustainable, high‑performing building services solutions and contribute to the continued growth and success of our Building Services business in Ireland.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the mechanical design and successful delivery of major building services projects across the healthcare, education, transport, and data centre sectors.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex projects, ensuring designs comply with Irish and international standards, regulations, and industry best practice.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design teams, working closely with electrical, structural, civil, architectural, and specialist engineering disciplines.
  • Develop innovative, energy‑efficient, and low‑carbon mechanical engineering solutions that support sustainable building design.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted technical advisor throughout all stages of project delivery.
  • Manage project schedules, resources, budgets, and commercial performance to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Review and approve engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and design documentation.
  • Mentor, coach, and support the professional development of junior engineers and graduates within the team.
  • Support business development by contributing to proposals, client presentations, and project interviews.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives and promote engineering excellence and best practice across the Building Services team.

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or be working towards chartership with Engineers Ireland or an equivalent recognised professional institution.
  • Extensive experience in the design and delivery of mechanical building services projects across a variety of sectors.
  • A proven track record of leading multidisciplinary design teams and successfully delivering complex engineering projects.
  • Strong technical expertise in HVAC systems, public health engineering, heating and cooling plant, low‑carbon technologies, and sustainable building services design.
