Job summary

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is seeking a Phlebotomist for the Medical Day Unit at Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital. The role involves blood collection and strong patient interaction within Haematology, with rotation and part-time hours.

The successful candidate will support clinical staff, ensure accurate specimen handling, and comply with safety and confidentiality policies while contributing to service targets.

Qualifications

• Educated to Standard Grade level or possess equivalent experience.
• Previous phlebotomy skills desirable but training can be provided.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Collect blood samples by venepuncture or capillary sampling as requested.
• Ensure accurate patient identification, sample collection and labelling of specimens.
• Support safe processing of cross-match samples per protocols.
• Liaise with phlebotomy team leaders and clinical staff throughout the day.
• Adhere to infection control, health & safety and confidentiality policies.
• Support timely delivery of blood specimens to laboratories to meet targets.
• Provide cover for other phlebotomists during leave or sickness.
• Contribute to efficient phlebotomy service across the Acute Division.

Job description

The Role An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Phlebotomist within the Medical Day Unit at Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital. The successful candidate will support medical staff within the Haematology Clinic by carrying out blood collection procedures and helping to ensure an efficient phlebotomy service. The role involves significant patient interaction and requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a Skilled Worker visa or a Health and Care Worker visa. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is unable to provide candidates or employees with a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS).
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

• Permanent, part‑time, 15.35 hours per week
• Shift Pattern - Rotational
• Base location - Stobhill Hospital

Key Responsibilities

• Collect blood samples by venepuncture or capillary sampling as requested by medical staff.
• Ensure accurate patient identification, sample collection, and labelling of specimens and documentation.
• Support the safe processing of blood transfusion cross‑match samples in line with protocols.
• Liaise effectively with phlebotomy team leaders and clinical staff throughout the working day.
• Adhere to Infection Control, Health & Safety, Incident Reporting, and Patient Confidentiality policies.
• Support the timely delivery of blood specimens to laboratories to meet service targets.
• Provide cover for other phlebotomists during annual leave and sickness absence.
• Contribute to the delivery of an efficient phlebotomy service across the Acute Division.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

• Educated to Standard Grade level or possess equivalent experience.
• Previous phlebotomy skills are desirable but not essential, as training can be provided.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong team‑working abilities.
• Good time management and organisational skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload effectively.
• Reliable, self‑motivated, and committed to delivering a high‑quality patient service.
