ESB is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join the Offshore EBoP Team in Ireland. The role centres on delivering onshore grid connections and offshore substations, coordinating interfaces and ensuring compliance with grid standards.

Job description

The Generation Engineering Offshore Wind (OSW) Group within Engineering and Major Projects (EMP), is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join its Offshore Electrical Balance of Plan (EBoP) Team. Positioned at the centre of Ireland and the UK’s offshore wind ambitions, the team delivers the offshore and onshore grid infrastructure required to connect world-class offshore wind resources to the national electricity networks. Working across a growing portfolio of major renewable energy projects, including Oriel (375 MW offshore wind farm, Ireland), Gwynt Glas (1.5 GW floating offshore wind farm, UK), and Tonn Nua (c.900 MW offshore wind farm, Ireland), the successful candidate will lead the technical and commercial delivery of onshore grid connections and offshore substations, including their associated electrical systems and interfaces. This will involve coordinating multidisciplinary engineering expertise to deliver onshore and offshore HV substations, managing key external contracts, and working closely with the offshore transmission delivery team to ensure alignment on technical interfaces, standards, and programme milestones. As projects progress through development, the role will also offer opportunities to transition into dedicated offshore wind project teams. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, commercially astute, and innovative, with a proven track record of delivering complex infrastructure projects of similar scale and strategic importance.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as electrical lead for onshore and offshore substations, coordinating closely with the wider transmission delivery team to ensure alignment on interfaces, standards and delivery timelines, and coordinating interfaces with the renewable generation plant, civil works, and the TSO/DSO.
• Lead the design and delivery of onshore and offshore substations, coordinating specialist engineering inputs and providing technical oversight of system studies, FEED, protection, control, SCADA and grid code compliance activities. Coordinate key interfaces across transmission infrastructure and project disciplines.
• Optimise design and support the construction stage to ensure wind farms achieve maximum reliability, quality and safety.
• Ensure all electrical design and delivery work adheres to current industry codes and standards, including EirGrid, ESB, National Grid, IEC and IEEE requirements as applicable.
• Provide input into the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) model.
• Support contracting and procurement activities, including technical specifications, tender evaluations, contract negotiations and technical oversight of suppliers and contractors.
• Ensure safety, health and environmental considerations are prioritised at every stage of the project.
• Act as the focal point for electrical integrity, identifying and managing technical and delivery risks across your assigned project portfolio and escalating issues as appropriate.
• Coordinate the development of substation layouts and drawings with design partners and contractors for planning submissions, and work with OEMs, contractors, partners and other key stakeholders to develop competitive cost estimates for auction submissions.
• Bring your experience to suggest improvements to specifications, technology choices and engineering risk management, promoting best practice across the team.
• Support the development of more junior engineers and share technical expertise across the wider EMP team.
• Represent ESB in technical discussions with regulatory bodies and industry forums as required.

Experience and Qualifications

• Level 8 degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
• Minimum seven years’ relevant experience in the large-scale generation or energy sector, including work on electrical systems from 33 kV to 400 kV.
• Strong technical design leadership and/or contract-management experience for substations, grid connections or electrical works on major infrastructure or renewable-generation projects.
• Working knowledge of project development and delivery, including scoping, planning, design, procurement, EPC-style contracts, construction and commissioning support.
• Proven ability to manage commercial and technical aspects of project delivery, including tender evaluation and contract negotiation.
• Strong decision-making, risk-management and problem-solving capability, with the ability to manage deadlines and competing priorities.
• Excellent communication, collaboration and stakeholder-management skills.

Desirable

• Level 9 qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Chartered Engineer status, or actively working towards Chartership.
• Substation design and grid-connection experience on large-scale wind or renewable projects.
• PSDP and/or CDM Coordinator experience.
• Experience working within a consortium or joint venture and a full valid driving licence for use in the Republic of Ireland.

This position will be based at the ESB Engineering & Major Projects office at The Sidings, Dublin, or Eastgate, Cork. Regular attendance at The Sidings, Dublin will be required, with frequency agreed with the line manager. Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.
