Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Microservices Engineer based in Ireland.

Join a globally distributed engineering environment focused on building reliable, scalable backend services that support critical infrastructure at massive scale.

In this role, you will design and develop REST API microservices using Go and Python, with a strong focus on quality and maintainability.

Your work will contribute to services capable of supporting millions of clients while delivering resilience, performance, and security.

You will help advance engineering practices across API design, distributed systems, databases, observability, security, and DevOps.

The role offers opportunities to take technical ownership, contribute to architecture decisions, and collaborate with engineers and open‑source communities worldwide.

You will work on challenging systems where scalability, fault tolerance, and operational excellence are essential.

This is an opportunity to grow your technical impact while working with a highly skilled, internationally distributed engineering team.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain high-quality, robust backend software and REST API microservices capable of operating reliably at significant scale.
  • Design APIs and software architectures for collaborative technical review, while contributing to API documentation and governance practices.
  • Develop comprehensive automated tests that validate software behavior and help maintain high standards of reliability and quality.
  • Build and operate fault‑tolerant applications and services with a strong focus on scalability, resilience, performance, and operational excellence.
  • Investigate technical issues, debug complex problems, and deliver effective, maintainable solutions.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and engineering standards to improve knowledge sharing across teams.
  • Collaborate proactively with globally distributed engineers and contribute to cross‑team technical initiatives.
  • Provide technical leadership within engineering teams and external communities by sharing knowledge, presenting ideas, and influencing best practices.
  • Explore and contribute to improvements in database performance, multi‑region service delivery, proactive security analysis, distributed‑system tracing and profiling, and next‑generation DevOps practices.
  • Participate in international team events and collaborate with colleagues in person approximately twice a year.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a comparable technical discipline, or a compelling alternative professional background.
  • Strong academic performance and a demonstrated history of taking initiative and exceeding expectations.
  • Professional experience developing modern, maintainable software using Python and/or Go.
  • Experience building scalable web services or working with systems programming.
  • Experience with both relational and non‑relational database systems, including an understanding of database performance considerations.
  • Hands‑on experience with continuous integration and continuous delivery practices.
  • Experience working with Linux, with Debian or Ubuntu experience considered valuable.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, API design, microservices, and distributed systems.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, with strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Curiosity, flexibility, accountability, self‑motivation, and a results‑oriented approach to delivering commitments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a globally distributed engineering environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
  • Additional valuable experience includes Docker, LXD, Kubernetes, build systems and toolchains, cross‑compilation, hyperscale or private clouds, performance engineering, security, and distributed‑system design and operations.
Benefits:
  • Worldwide compensation based on geographic location, experience, and performance, with annual compensation reviews.
  • Performance‑driven annual bonus in addition to base compensation.
  • Distributed work environment with twice‑yearly in‑person team sprints.
  • USD 2,000 annual personal learning and development budget.
  • Recognition and performance rewards.
  • Annual holiday leave.
  • Maternity and paternity leave.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities to travel internationally and meet colleagues in new locations.
  • Priority Pass and travel upgrades for long‑haul company events.
  • Exposure to large‑scale microservices, open‑source technologies, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and advanced DevOps practices.
  • Opportunities to contribute to technical strategy, engineering standards, and external technical communities.
