Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior UX Designer / UX Lead to support a major programme focused on improving the citizen experience across government digital services.

This is a senior, hands-on UX role with responsibility for looking across multiple digital products and services and ensuring they work together as a connected, intuitive end-to-end user journey, rather than as individual standalone products.

The Role

The successful candidate will provide UX leadership across a portfolio of digital services, with a particular focus on end-to-end citizen journeys, experience cohesion, user research and continuous UX improvement.

You will work closely with product, design and delivery teams, identifying pain points and gaps across services and providing evidence-based recommendations to improve the overall user experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a holistic view of end-to-end user journeys across multiple digital products and services.
  • Create and maintain an Experience Inventory in Figma.
  • Produce detailed citizen journey maps and identify pain points, handover issues and opportunities to improve service continuity.
  • Conduct UX assessments and design assurance reviews across digital products.
  • Identify inconsistencies between products and recommend improvements to create a more cohesive experience.
  • Develop practical approaches to user testing and validation.
  • Use UX research, analytics and user feedback to inform design decisions.
  • Establish repeatable UX review processes and support continuous improvement.
  • Work across multiple teams and programmes to promote consistent UX principles, patterns and design standards.
  • Provide prioritised UX recommendations and contribute to an ongoing UX improvement roadmap.
  • Support product teams in implementing and validating UX improvements.
Experience & Skills

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong experience as a Senior UX Designer, UX Lead or similar.
  • Proven experience designing and improving complex end-to-end digital journeys.
  • Experience with journey mapping, service design and experience mapping.
  • Strong understanding of user-centred design and UX best practice.
  • Experience conducting or developing approaches to user research, usability testing and validation.
  • Ability to review existing digital products and provide practical, evidence-based UX recommendations.
  • Experience working across multiple products, platforms or multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Ability to influence product and programme decisions from a UX perspective.
  • Experience working with design systems and reusable UX patterns.
  • Previous experience with government, public-sector or large-scale citizen/customer-facing digital services would be advantageous.

The role will initially focus on delivering an experience inventory, end-to-end journey maps, UX cohesion assessment, prioritised UX recommendations, user-testing approach and UX improvement roadmap.

The overall goal is to improve consistency across digital services and deliver a clearer, more joined-up citizen experience.
