Job summary

Ability West in Galway City is seeking an Instructor to work with School Leavers providing Day Service support. Based in Salthill, you will deliver instruction in arts, crafts, social skills, and independent living skills as part of a supportive team.

You will help people we support achieve independence, with driving license required, and there are training and pension benefits. Salary scales €30,928 to €49,222 per year, 30 hours per week; closing date 18 September 2026.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting people with challenging behaviours.

EXCITING OPPORTUNITY - We have a new exciting opportunity for an Instructor to work in Galway City for School Leavers to provide Day Service support. Join our dedicated team, make a difference for the people we support to live their best life.

The Instructor role is based in Salthill, Galway.

Ability West provides a wide range of high-quality services to children and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism across Galway City and County. Services provided are day, residential, short breaks, community supports, rehabilitative training and multi-disciplinary supports. Each person is supported and valued within an environment which promotes their overall autonomy, health and wellbeing and enables them to reach their potential.

The Role:

Provide, under direction, instruction in a variety of areas including, arts, crafts, social skills, woodwork, cookery, horticulture, and independent living skills depending on people we support' preferences and ability.

Instruct on courses that will include specific skills as well as social development, personal care and community integration.

Work as part of a team where work may be of a flexible nature and duties interrelate and overlap.

To establish and maintain relationships with people we support that are based on respect and equality and that promotes their independence.

Essential Criteria:

• Experience in working with and supporting people we support who can present with behaviours that challenge.
• Experience in supporting and working with individuals on the autism spectrum.
• A knowledge of a variety of communication needs and supports.
• A knowledge of New Directions interim Standards for Day services.
• An ability to instruct people we support in all programmes offered at Day Centres.
• Full current driving license.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
