Job summary

Bus Éireann in Waterford is seeking a practical, hands-on operations assistant to maintain onboard systems across our fleet. You will check ticket machines, location tracking, CCTV, WiFi and other equipment, performing health checks and simple repairs to keep buses running on time.

You will work with depot staff, IT, Maintenance and suppliers to resolve issues, log incidents in ServiceNow, and ensure spare stock is managed.

Qualifications

  • Experience in technical support or transport operations.
  • Qualification in electrical or mechanical area is advantageous.
  • Full, clean Category B driving licence and willingness to travel between depots.

Job description

Bus Éireann is looking for a practical, hands-on individual to join our operational team in Waterford.

In this role, you will help keep our buses running smoothly each day by checking, supporting and looking after key onboard equipment. This includes ticket machines and other systems such as location tracking, communication devices, CCTV, WiFi and similar onboard equipment. 5 over 7 day working arrangement starting at 5am to support daily run out and typically one Sunday in every 4 to carry out health checks, updates and equipment audits .

As part of a local team, your main role is to make sure each bus leaves the depot with a working ticket machine and that other onboard systems are regularly checked and functioning properly. You will work closely with local depot staff, central support teams, suppliers and other operations teams to quickly resolve any issues that arise.

This role requires confidence using technology, keeping accurate records and keeping track of equipment performance. You will work side-by-side with teams such as Maintenance, IT, Cash Office, local operations and AVL (vehicle tracking) to ensure smooth daily operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Frontline Support:
  • Be the first point of contact for depot staff who report issues with onboard equipment.
  • Carry out basic checks and troubleshooting, such as restarting devices, updating settings and reviewing equipment status.
  • Log issues accurately in dedicated systems and escalation when needed.
  • Help drivers and depot staff with quick fixes to avoid delays to service.
  • Check and repair ticket machines where possible and carry out simple functionality tests.
  • Replace faulty ticketing equipment or SIM cards when required, maintaining accurate records.
  • Keep track of faulty equipment, label it and prepare it for collection or repair by suppliers.
  • Test new software updates on onboard devices and carry out resets if required.
Monitoring and Routine Checks
  • Monitor system dashboards and ServiceNow alerts to spot equipment issues early.
  • Highlight repeated or ongoing problems to the appropriate teams.
  • Assist with software updates and regular equipment checks.
  • Replace faulty onboard plug out/plug in equipment using the spare stock available, ensuring the correct settings and information are installed.
  • Complete and record regular health checks on onboard systems (e.g. connectivity, log-ons, software versions).
  • Ensure spare equipment is available and updated daily so buses can be deployed without delay.
  • Check ticket machines download the latest information and upload revenue data each day.
  • Work with station teams to make sure enough ticketing equipment is available and faulty items are returned for repair.
Record Keeping and Reporting
  • Keep an up-to-date record of all onboard equipment across your region using dedicated apps and ServiceNow email.
  • Maintain logs of faulty items, replacements and where each piece of equipment is located.
  • Track spare equipment levels and arrange replenishments when needed.
  • Produce periodic reports showing:
  • Equipment performance and issues
  • Percentage of buses fully operational
  • Trends or repeated issues across the fleet
  • Up-to-date equipment lists and stock levels
Communication and Teamwork
  • Work closely with local operations teams, AVL Control, Traffic Supervisors and Cash Office staff.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance to report equipment problems linked to wiring, power or mounting plates.
  • Collaborate with central support teams, IT, Maintenance Supervisors and supplier technicians to resolve issues and carry out updates or repairs.
  • Work with the NTA and their contractors to support NTA-managed onboard systems.
  • Provide clear notes and explanations when passing issues to other teams.
KEY SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
  • Practical ability to carry out basic checks, troubleshooting and simple repairs on onboard equipment (e.g. power, connections, simple diagnostics).
  • Comfortable using computers, laptops and software tools to update, check and record equipment status.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work through issues methodically and escalation when needed.
  • Good organisation and record-keeping skills including maintaining logs, tracking equipment and managing spare stock.
  • Clear and confident communicator with the ability to support drivers, depot staff and other operational teams.
  • Reliable, proactive and capable of working independently while managing daily responsibilities.
  • Full, clean Category B driving licence, with flexibility to travel between depots.
  • Experience in technical support, transport operations or working with equipment or devices is an advantage.
  • A qualification in electrical, mechanical or a similar practical/technical area is an advantage.
