Job summary

The City of Springfield Human Resources is seeking a Plumbing and Gas Inspector to inspect and enforce compliance with municipal codes for plumbing, gas fitting, and associated systems. The role requires strong judgment, independent field work, and the ability to communicate with owners, architects, and lawyers.

Responsibilities include reviewing permit plans, inspecting installations, investigating violations, and testifying in court when necessary.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent in a technical field.
• Considerable journeyman or master plumber experience.
• State-mandated training (12 hours) required by the state.
• Thorough knowledge of municipal ordinances and plumbing/gas fitting codes.

Responsibilities

• Examine permit plans for plumbing, gas system installations and related work to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
• Advise owners, architects, engineers, and lawyers on plumbing, gas fitting, and sprinkler issues and interpret codes and regulations.
• Inspect plumbing systems during installation, repair and alteration for proper layout, joints, materials, safety devices, and venting as per plans.
• Inspect gas fitting systems and appliances for safety and code compliance with approved plans.
• Investigate complaints and gather evidence of code violations for enforcement actions.
• Issue verbal or written orders to correct deviations and follow up to ensure compliance.
• Appear in court to testify and enforce compliance when needed.
• Prepare reports detailing findings, actions taken, and recommendations for future actions.
