Job summary

SGS is seeking a Gas Inspector to plan and carry out risk-based audits and inspections of Registered Gas Installers, ensuring compliance with the RGI Scheme Criteria Document and applicable legislation. You will document findings in SIMS, identify non-conformances, and communicate corrective actions to RGIs.

The role requires strong technical knowledge, a full driving licence, and eligibility for RGI registration.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years’ experience in the gas industry.
• Advanced Craft Certificate in a relevant field.
• DGS/NDGS qualification with RGIs eligibility.
• Familiarity with IS 813, IS 820, EN 1949, Building Regulations.

Responsibilities

• Plan and conduct risk-based audits of RGIs and document findings in SIMS.
• Assess compliance, record non-conformances, and communicate corrective actions.
• Apply professional judgement to assess risk and make decisions per scheme rules.
• Investigate gas-related complaints and prepare investigation reports when required.

As part of the Safety Supervisory Body responsible for the operation of the Registered Gas Installer (RGI) Scheme on behalf of the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU), the Gas Inspector plays a key role in maintaining gas safety and regulatory compliance across the scheme.

The role involves planning and carrying out risk-based audits and inspections of Registered Gas Installers in accordance with the RGI Scheme Criteria Document , applicable legislation, standards and procedures.

Job Description

ROLE OVERVIEW

• Job Title: Gas Inspector
• Job Type: Permanent
• Hours: 40 per week
• Salary: 60,000 - 63,000 p/a DOE

Responsibilities

• Plan and carry out risk-based audits and inspections of RGIs, in accordance with the RGI Scheme Criteria Document, applicable legislation, standards and procedures, accurately documenting all inspection findings and required actions within the Scheme Information Management System (SIMS).
• Assess compliance, identify and accurately record non-conformances, and clearly communicate the findings and requirements for corrective action to RGIs.
• Apply sound professional judgement, assess risk objectively and make fair, consistent decisions in accordance with scheme requirements.
• Investigate complaints relating to gas works and prepare accurate investigation reports where required to support complaint and disciplinary processes.
• Provide clarification to RGIs on relevant standards and scheme requirements, while maintaining the independence and integrity of the inspection process.
• Represent the scheme professionally with installers, their customers and members of the public, and promote gas safety at scheme and industry events.
• Manage and prioritise inspections within an allocated area to meet scheme programme targets.
• Maintain and develop technical competence and knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and scheme requirements.

Qualifications

• At least 5 years’ experience in the gas industry.
• Advanced Craft Certificate in Gas Fitting, Electrical, Plumbing, Refrigeration or Pipefitting, or equivalent.
• Domestic Gas Safety (DGS) or Non-Domestic Gas Safety (NDGS) Award or equivalent, with eligibility for registration as an RGI.
• Familiarity with I.S. 813, I.S. 820 and I.S. EN 1949, the Building Regulations, manufacturers’ instructions.
• Full, clean driving licence, and valid Safe Pass and Manual Handling certificates

Desirable

• Assessor qualification (City & Guilds A1/A2 or willingness to obtain one.
• Experience of audit, inspection or competence-assessment work
• Experience of investigating complaints or writing technical reports
• Strong technical knowledge of domestic, non-domestic and LPG gas installations
