Job summary

Stryker Group is seeking an R&D Co‑Op Student in Ireland to support the design, development and verification of electrical components for medical devices. You will work with R&D New Product Development teams to bring new devices to market and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

You will assist in schematic capture, BOM management, prototype evaluation, bench testing, and documentation under supervision, while learning DFx and risk management processes in a collaborative,

  • Basic understanding of electrical engineering principles.
  • Familiarity with electrical design tools in regulated environments.
  • Exposure to schematic capture and layout tools.

Responsibilities

What you will do:

As an R&D Co-Op Student, you will perform a wide variety of technical work in planning and design of medical devices for Orthopedic Surgeons to allow them to plan and perform their procedures. This role will support the R&D New Product Development Teams as they bring new medical devices products to market.

Technical Competencies: Under supervision, you will assist in the following areas to support the design, development, and verification of electrical components for medical devices:

  • Schematic, Netlist, Layout Generation & Review: Assist in developing and reviewing electrical schematics, generating netlists, and performing layout reviews.

  • BOM Management: Support the generation, scrubbing, and review of Bills of Materials (BOM).

  • Prototype Design & Evaluation: Contribute to designing prototypes and evaluating their performance through systematic testing.

  • Bench Testing: Perform hands‑on bench testing to verify electrical designs and assess device performance.

  • Electrical Stack-Ups: Participate in stack‑up analysis, including:

  • Component de‑rating analysis

  • Worst case/Monte Carlo analysis

  • LTspice simulations

  • Design for Excellence (DFX): Assist in Design for Manufacturing (DFMA), Design for Fabrication (DFF), and Design for Testability (DFT) reviews.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support problem‑solving and root cause analysis to identify and evaluate potential solutions against defined requirements.

  • Conduct research and studies to support innovative product design..

Business Responsibilities:

  • Understand the product’s intended use and clinical procedures.

Med Device Compliance:

  • Learn fundamental industry standards, design requirements and test strategies which align with regulatory requirements.

  • With supervision, create or refine engineering documentation, such as the Design History file per company design control procedures.

  • Learn R&D procedures like design controls and risk management, per the Quality Management System.

General Responsibilities:

  • With supervision, work with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success.

  • Learn procedures, policies, processes, systems, and technology required.

  • Work on problems in limited scope; purposefully learn while gaining experience.

  • Demonstrate ownership and integrity of work.

  • Build stable relationships.

  • Contribute to the project as a team member.

Educational Requirements

  • Studying / completed a Bachelor’s or Master's Degree in Electrical, Electronic Engineering, or related discipline.

  • Basic understanding of electrical engineering principles, including circuit design and analysis.

  • Familiarity with electrical design tools and practices within a structured or regulated environment (e.g., team projects, internships, coursework).

Design Tools:

  • Exposure to eCAD tools for schematic capture and basic layout design (e.g., Altium Designer or similar tools).

  • Awareness of circuit simulation tools (e.g., LTspice, Multisim) through coursework or personal projects.

Analysis Skills:

  • Ability to perform basic analysis tasks, including:

  • Understanding of tolerances and their impact on design.

  • Simple statistical methods for data evaluation.

Manufacturing & Materials:

  • Introductory knowledge of PCB design and manufacturing processes (e.g., stack-ups, component selection).

  • Awareness of Design for Excellence (DFX) concepts (basic understanding is sufficient).

Documentation:

  • Ability to interpret basic electrical drawings and schematics.

  • Exposure to preparing or understanding engineering reports and documentation through class assignments or internships.

Preferred Skills / Engineering Tools:

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for documentation and analysis.

  • Familiarity with eCAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer, KiCad, or similar tools used in coursework).

  • Exposure to bench-testing equipment (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes) during labs or projects.

  • Willingness to learn PCB/PCBA print generation and review processes.
