Job summary

Grab is seeking an experienced backend engineer to join its Jakarta office. You will design backend components, build distributed systems, and work with Go, SQL/NoSQL, Redis, and Kafka to deliver scalable services for millions of users in Southeast Asia.

Reporting to the engineering manager, you will collaborate with product and other teams, participate in code reviews, and contribute to on-call rotations, DevOps support, and knowledge sharing across the Tech Family.

Qualifications

• Degree in Engineering with CS/IT focus preferred.
• At least 4+ years of relevant backend experience.
• Proficient in Go and fundamentals of CS (data structures, algorithms).
• Experience building distributed backend systems with DBMS (SQL/NoSQL) and caches (Redis).
• Experience with Kubernetes and Kafka is a plus.
• Good written and spoken English; proactive and collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

• Design backend components and APIs for scalable services.
• Collaborate with product, business, and other engineering teams to solve user issues.
• Ensure high quality, maintainable, and bug-free code.
• Participate in technical and product reviews and code reviews.
• Support on-call rotations and respond to incidents.
• Assist DevOps/Infra teams in service scope and deployment.
• Provide guidance and knowledge sharing to peers.

The Critical Tasks You Will Perform

• Design backend components
• Collaborate with product, business, and other engineering teams to solve our user pain points
• Ensure of high quality, maintainable, and bug-free code
• Participate in technical and product reviews
• Ensure a closure of assigned code reviews
• You will participate in team on-call rotation to help us achieve operational excellence
• Support the DevOps/Infra team in the scope of your services
• Provide guidance, mentorship, and knowledge sharing to your peers

QualificationsWhat Essential Skills You Will Need

• You have a degree in Engineering – specialization in CS/IT will be an advantage
• You have at least 4+ years of working experience in a relevant field
• You are proficient in one or more programming languages (we mostly use Go) and the fundamentals of CS, such as data structures and algorithms
• Working knowledge of building distributed backend systems with DBMS (SQL, NoSQL) and caches (Redis) – Kubernetes and Kafka experience will be an advantage
• You showcase proactivity and creativity, and understand the right balance between product, engineering, and business needs
• You have exposure to Agile and weekly sprint and release working models
• Proficiency in English both oral and written
