Job summary

Qualifications

  • Experience in slope stability, monitoring, reporting, and closure support in mining.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, monitor, analyze, and evaluate geotechnical conditions for mine closure, mine surface, regional and non-mining infrastructure.
  • Conduct geotechnical assessments and risk evaluations for surface mine areas and critical facilities.
  • Analyze geotechnical data, field observations, and ground performance trends to identify hazards.
  • Provide engineering recommendations, mitigation measures, and risk management strategies.
  • Review dump placement, slope configuration, and geotechnical controls for stability.
  • Coordinate inspections, investigations, monitoring, and data collection programs.
  • Develop geotechnical databases, risk evaluations, and historical records.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and engineering recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Lead geotechnical studies to improve risk controls, safety, and infrastructure performance.
  • Coach and train non-staff personnel in monitoring, inspections, data collection, and reporting.

The purpose of this position is:
Plan, coordinate, monitor, analyze, evaluate, and provide engineering recommendations for geotechnical activities related to mine closure, mine surface, regional, and non-mining infrastructure areas from Portsite to Grasberg.

This position is responsible for conducting geotechnical assessments, evaluating ground performance and slope stability risks, supporting risk management and mitigation programs, and ensuring that geotechnical recommendations enhance the safety, reliability, and performance of mine surface and non-mining infrastructure under current and future operating conditions.

The key duties and responsibilities of this position are:

  • Plan, monitor, analyze, and evaluate geotechnical conditions for mine closure, mine surface, regional, and non-mining infrastructure areas.
  • Conduct geotechnical assessments and risk evaluations for surface mine areas, including waste/dump areas, infrastructure slopes, access roads, and other critical facilities.
  • Analyze and interpret geotechnical monitoring data, field observations, geological conditions, and ground performance trends to identify potential hazards and unfavorable conditions.
  • Provide engineering recommendations, mitigation measures, and risk management strategies to support safe operations, infrastructure performance, and mine closure objectives.
  • Review dump placement, slope configuration, material characteristics, and geotechnical controls to support stable mine surface and closure-related landform development.
  • Coordinate geotechnical inspections, field investigations, monitoring activities, and data collection programs to support timely assessment and decision-making.
  • Develop, maintain, and analyze geotechnical databases, risk evaluations, and historical records to support future assessment, reporting, and engineering studies.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, risk summaries, and engineering recommendations for stakeholders and management review.
  • Initiate and support geotechnical engineering studies to improve risk controls, operational safety, and long-term infrastructure performance.
  • Provide coaching, technical guidance, and on-the-job training to non-staff personnel to enhance their competency in geotechnical monitoring, field inspection, data collection, and reporting practices.
  • Coordinate with related departments and stakeholders to ensure geotechnical recommendations are communicated effectively and implemented as required.
  • Ensure compliance with PTFI Safety and Environmental Programs and promote continuous safety improvement.

Minimum Education and Experience

S1 degree in Geology, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering, with a minimum of 2 years of working experience in geotechnical projects, mine surface geotechnical assessment, mine closure support, slope stability, monitoring, and reporting, preferably in the mining industry.

  • Good understanding of geotechnical and geological knowledge.
  • Good understanding of mine surface geotechnical risk management and mine closure geotechnical requirements.
  • Good understanding of slope stability, dump stability, and ground performance assessment.
  • Good understanding of geotechnical monitoring, field inspection, and data interpretation practices.
  • Ability to use and interpret results from practical geotechnical engineering software, such as Slope/W, Seep/W, Sigma/W, FLAC, Rocscience tools, Dips, Swedge, RocFall, and other relevant geotechnical analysis applications.
  • Analytical thinking and technical reporting skills.
