Role Overview
As a Product Design Engineer, you’ll own the mechanical and physical design of our wearable sweat sensing device, from early concepts and prototypes through to design for manufacturing. You’ll work closely with our sensor, electronics, microfluidics, and firmware teams to integrate everything into a product that is comfortable, durable, and reliable during real-world activity, while staying manufacturable at scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design of the wearable device, including enclosures, sensor patches, mounting and attachment systems, and cartridge or consumable components.
- Create 3D models, assemblies, and detailed 2D drawings with appropriate tolerances (GD&T) in CAD.
- Design for the unique demands of on-skin wearables: comfort, flexibility, skin adhesion, sweat and water resistance, breathability, and durability during exercise.
- Select and evaluate materials suited to skin contact and wearable use, such as medical-grade adhesives, silicones, TPUs, flexible substrates, and textiles, with attention to biocompatibility.
- Integrate PCBs, batteries, flexible electronics, and nanomembran sweat pat channels into compact, robust assemblies.
- Rapidly prototype using 3D printing, CNC, casting, and laser cutting, and iterate based on testing and user feedback.
- Plan and run mechanical and reliability testing (drop, flex, ingress/IP rating, adhesion, wear time) and analyze failures.
- Apply DFM/DFA principles and work with suppliers and contract manufacturers on tooling, injection molding, and pilot production.
- Support user studies and wear trials to evaluate fit, comfort, and usability across diverse body types and activities.
- Maintain design documentation, BOMs, and change records, and contribute to design controls where regulatory requirements apply.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience designing physical products from concept to production, ideally in consumer electronics, wearables, or medical devices.
- Strong proficiency in CAD (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Creo, or Onshape), including surface modeling for ergonomic forms.
- Hands-on experience with prototyping methods and workshop tools.
- Solid understanding of manufacturing processes such as injection molding, overmolding, die cutting, and lamination, along with tolerance analysis.
- A practical, test-driven approach to solving design problems, and the ability to balance aesthetics, function, and cost.
- Clear communication skills and comfort working in a cross-functional R&D team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing wearables or skin-adhered devices (e.g., patches, fitness trackers, continuous monitors).
- Familiarity with flexible or stretchable electronics, and with integrating microfluidics into physical products.
- An eye for industrial design and endurance athletes' user experience.
- Knowledge of biocompatibility and medical device standards (e.g., ISO 10993, ISO 13485, IEC 60601) and design controls.
- Experience with FEA or other simulation tools for structural or thermal analysis.
- Experience working with overseas suppliers and contract manufacturers through production ramp.
