Job summary

Sensory Artisan, a part of sensory ZERO (HK) Limited, invites a Head Roaster / Manager of Roastery to lead roasting operations, quality assurance, and team development in Hong Kong. You will shape roast profiles, oversee procurement, and coordinate with sales for seasonal transitions.

The role demands strong leadership, sharp sensory skills, and proficiency with roasting software, with a focus on turning raw beans into exceptional specialty coffees.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in professional coffee roasting and production management.
• Strong sensory evaluation skills; CQI Q Grader preferred.
• Proficiency in roasting software and inventory management systems.
• Excellent leadership and communication abilities.
• Able to lift up to 30 kg in a fast-paced warehouse.
• Bilingual written Chinese and English.

Responsibilities

• Develop, calibrate, and refine roast profiles for core offerings and microlot.
• Manage green coffee procurement, sourcing, and price negotiation.
• Optimize and manage the logistics system.
• Oversee cupping, QC, moisture analysis, color tracking, and extraction testing.
• Manage production scheduling, inventory, fulfillment, and roastery maintenance.
• Lead and train the roastery team and coordinate with baristas and marketing.
• Coordinate with sales to forecast demand and seasonal transitions.
• Oversee packaging for retail/wholesale and end-to-end online fulfillment.

About the role

Sensory Artisan is seeking a talented and visionary Head Roaster / Manager of Roastery to lead our roasting operations, drive quality assurance, and champion technical excellence across our specialty coffee lineup. In this role, you will curate bespoke roast profiles, manage roastery production and equipment, lead and mentor a passionate team, and collaborate on green coffee procurement.

Candidates with significant leadership and operational experience may also be considered for the "Manager, Coffee Roastery & Wholesale" role which requires P&L responsibilities, managing the roastery as a self-contained business unit, including managing key corporate accounts and fostering long-term client relationships.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, calibrate, and refine roast profiles for core offerings of specialty coffee and seasonal microlot
• Manage procurement of green coffee, including sourcing and price negotiation
• Optimise and manage the logistics system
• Oversee daily cupping sessions, Quality Control (QC) protocols, including moisture analysis, color tracking (Agtron), and extraction testing
• Manage production scheduling, inventory management, fulfillment, and roastery machinery maintenance
• Lead, mentor, and train the roastery production team and collaborate closely with baristas and marketing
• Coordinate with the sales team to forecast upcoming demand and seasonal transitions
• Oversee the packaging process for retail and wholesale distribution and manage the end-to-end fulfillment process for online orders

Requirements

• Proven experience in professional coffee roasting and production management
• Strong sensory evaluation skills (Licensed CQI Q Grader preferred)
• Proficiency in roasting software and inventory management systems
• Excellent leadership and communication abilities
• Capability to lift heavy loads (up to 30kg) and work in a fast-paced warehouse environment
• Good command of both written Chinese and English
