Job Description: Freelance Community Interpreter ([Language])
Position: Freelance [Language] Interpreter
Languages Needed: Nepali, Urdu, Hindi, Tagalog, Thai, Bahasa Indonesia, Punjabi (Indian), and Vietnamese.
Location: Remote & On-site (as needed for assignments in [City/Region])
Assignment Type: Freelance/Contract (As-needed basis)
Role Overview:
We are seeking qualified and professional freelance interpreters to provide accurate and confidential interpretation services for [Language]-speaking individuals in community settings. The successful candidate will serve as a vital communication bridge, facilitating understanding in areas such as healthcare, legal, government, and social services. Your work will ensure non-English speakers have equitable access to essential services.
We are currently building our network of interpreters for the following languages:
- Nepali
- Urdu
- Hindi
- Tagalog
- Thai
- Bahasa Indonesia
- Punjabi (Indian)
- Vietnamese
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide faithful, accurate, and confidential consecutive interpretation between [Language] and English for clients and service providers.
- Interpret in various settings, which may include medical appointments, legal meetings, court proceedings, social service interviews, and educational sessions.
- Maintain strict impartiality and confidentiality in all assignments, adhering to a professional code of ethics.
- Accurately convey the tone, intent, and cultural context of the speaker without adding, omitting, or altering the meaning.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and act as a cultural bridge when appropriate.
- Manage assignment logistics, including punctuality, preparation, and professional communication with all parties.
- Complete brief session reports or time logs as required.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Native or near-native fluency in [Language] and English.
- Proven experience in professional interpretation, preferably in community, medical, or legal settings.
- Strong understanding of the interpreter's role and commitment to ethical standards (confidentiality, impartiality, accuracy).
- Excellent listening, memory, and note-taking skills for consecutive interpretation.
- Ability to interpret under pressure and handle sensitive or emotionally charged situations with professionalism.
- Cultural sensitivity and deep awareness of the associated culture(s).
- For relevant languages: Ability to interpret in the required dialect (e.g., Eastern vs. Western Punjabi).
- Reliable mode of transportation for on-site assignments or high-speed internet for remote assignments.
Preferred Qualifications (Valuable Assets):
- Formal training or certification in interpretation (e.g., CCHI, NBCMI, or equivalent).
- Certification in a specialized field (e.g., medical or legal interpretation).
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation, Linguistics, or a related field.
- Experience with remote interpreting platforms (video/telephone).
