The candidate will oversee mechanical design, validation, and collaboration with optical and electronics teams, mentoring engineers and driving DFM/DFR best practices for cost-effective solutions.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Ph.D. preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in mechanical design and analysis, preferably in optical/high-tech manufacturing.
• Expert proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks) and PDM/PLM systems.
• Strong experience with advanced FEA and CFD tools (ANSYS, FLOTHERM).

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and analysis of opto-mechanical assemblies and systems for new product introduction and enhancements.
• Perform advanced engineering analysis (FEA, CFD, tolerance analysis) to ensure performance and reliability.
• Develop detailed mechanical specs, design docs, and test plans.
• Collaborate with optical, electrical, manufacturing, and program management teams to define requirements and troubleshoot issues.
• Mentor junior engineers and guide the mechanical team.

Lumentum is seeking a highly experienced and innovative Engineer Principal, Mechanical to lead the design, development, and optimization of complex mechanical systems for our cutting-edge optical products. This role involves driving advanced mechanical engineering solutions from concept to production, ensuring robust performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design and analysis of opto-mechanical assemblies, modules, and systems for new product introduction and existing product enhancements.
• Conduct advanced engineering analysis, including FEA (stress, thermal, vibration), CFD, and tolerance analysis, to ensure design integrity and performance.
• Develop detailed mechanical specifications, design documentation, and test plans.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including optical engineers, electrical engineers, manufacturing engineers, and program managers to define requirements, integrate designs, and troubleshoot issues.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance within the mechanical engineering team.
• Drive the selection and qualification of materials, components, and manufacturing processes.
• Identify and implement innovative mechanical solutions to improve product performance, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability.
• Oversee design validation and verification activities, including prototype testing and failure analysis.
• Stay abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in mechanical engineering and optical systems.

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; Ph.D. preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in mechanical design and analysis, preferably within the optical, semiconductor, or high-tech manufacturing industries.
• Expert proficiency with 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) and PDM/PLM systems.
• Demonstrated expertise in advanced FEA and CFD tools (e.g., ANSYS, FLOTHERM).
• Strong understanding of material science, heat transfer, vibrations, and precision mechanical design principles.
• Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and design for reliability (DFR).
• Proven ability to lead complex technical projects and mentor engineering teams.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a strong analytical mindset.
• Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
• Experience with optical alignment and packaging techniques is a significant advantage.
