Job summary

Lumentum is seeking a highly experienced Engineer Principal, Mechanical to lead the design, development, and optimization of complex mechanical systems for our cutting-edge optical products.

This role involves driving advanced mechanical engineering solutions from concept to production, ensuring robust performance, reliability, and manufacturability. You will mentor junior engineers and collaborate across optical, electrical, and manufacturing teams.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Ph.D. preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive mechanical design and analysis experience in optical/high-tech industries.
• Expert with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks) and PDM/PLM systems; strong FEA/CFD tooling (ANSYS, FLOTHERM).
• Deep understanding of materials, heat transfer, vibrations, and precision mechanical design.
• Proven ability to lead complex projects and mentor teams; strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and analysis of opto-mechanical assemblies for new products and improvements.
• Perform advanced analysis (FEA, CFD, tolerance) to ensure performance and reliability.
• Develop mechanical specs, documentation, and test plans.
• Collaborate with optical/electrical/manufacturing teams to define requirements and integrate designs.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance within the team.
• Drive material/component selection and manufacturing process qualification.
• Identify innovative mechanical solutions to improve performance, cost, and manufacturability.
• Oversee design validation and prototype testing, plus failure analysis.
• Stay current with industry trends and best practices in mechanical and optical systems.

Lumentum is seeking a highly experienced and innovative Engineer Principal, Mechanical to lead the design, development, and optimization of complex mechanical systems for our cutting-edge optical products. This role involves driving advanced mechanical engineering solutions from concept to production, ensuring robust performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the mechanical design and analysis of opto-mechanical assemblies, modules, and systems for new product introduction and existing product enhancements.
• Conduct advanced engineering analysis, including FEA (stress, thermal, vibration), CFD, and tolerance analysis, to ensure design integrity and performance.
• Develop detailed mechanical specifications, design documentation, and test plans.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including optical engineers, electrical engineers, manufacturing engineers, and program managers to define requirements, integrate designs, and troubleshoot issues.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance within the mechanical engineering team.
• Drive the selection and qualification of materials, components, and manufacturing processes.
• Identify and implement innovative mechanical solutions to improve product performance, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability.
• Oversee design validation and verification activities, including prototype testing and failure analysis.
• Stay abreast of industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in mechanical engineering and optical systems.

Required Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; Ph.D. preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in mechanical design and analysis, preferably within the optical, semiconductor, or high-tech manufacturing industries.
• Expert proficiency with 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) and PDM/PLM systems.
• Demonstrated expertise in advanced FEA and CFD tools (e.g., ANSYS, FLOTHERM).
• Strong understanding of material science, heat transfer, vibrations, and precision mechanical design principles.
• Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and design for reliability (DFR).
• Proven ability to lead complex technical projects and mentor engineering teams.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a strong analytical mindset.
• Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
• Experience with optical alignment and packaging techniques is a significant advantage.
