Job overview

The role of the Clinical Director is to assist the Care Group Director to provide strategic and operational leadership for all elements of the portfolio of services within the care group ensuring the delivery of effective, efficient and high-quality services.

Appointments will normally be made for a period of no less than three years and will be subject to the agreement of the Chief Executive.

Clinical Directors will be responsible to the Care Group Director, and ultimately the Trust Board.

A yearly appraisal of the Clinical Directors managerial work will be conducted by the Care Group Director.

Appointed Clinical Directors will be expected to undergo, or have completed, the Trusts clinical leadership development programme.

The work of the Clinical Director will be identified within the individual’s job plan, where responsibility payments and any compensatory reduction in other work will also be made clear. The altered job plan will be agreed with the Medical Director Team.

Main duties of the job
  • To manage, in partnership with the Care Group Director and Care Group Manager, the Directorate including undertaking Personal Development Reviews and ensuring appropriate support, development and leadership are in place.
  • To take the major role in managing effective, safe, and appropriate services within a Directorate.
  • To support the work of the Care Group Manager and Care Group Management Team and through them ensure the Care Group is managed appropriately and in accordance with Trust guidelines and structure.
  • Ensure that the contract with Postgraduate Dean for junior medical staff is met.
  • Assist the Care Group Director to ensure effective two-way communication between Trust Board, Executive Board and all clinical staff within the Directorate.
  • Ensure appropriate mechanisms are in place so that effective two-way communications take place within all staff of the Directorate.
  • To carry out the responsibilities of a delegated budget holder for specific expenditure types.
  • To ensure that appropriate teaching and research is delivered within the Care Group.
  • Consider, evaluate and approve study leave requests in accordance with Trust policy and monitor the CME status of Consultants within the Care Group.
  • To approve all annual leave requests for medical staff within the Care Group after ensuring the continuity of clinical services.
  • Ensuring that the outside commitments of medical staff in the Care Group (learning leave, private practice, holidays etc) are balanced and managed according to Trust-wide principles in order to protect all service commitments.
  • Ensure clinical audit takes place, and that time provided for governance is monitored and used effectively within the Trusts policies.
  • Continually seek to improve patient experiences and outcomes.
  • To deputise for the Care Group Director as required, for example at meetings and groups.
