Job description

Job Title: Rough Sleeper Support Worker

Contract: Fixed-Term (31.03.2026)
Location: Whitecross Road Hub, Hereford
Hours: 37
Salary: HC07 (starting: £31,067)
Closing date: 30/04/2025

Interview: TBC

The role

An exciting Housing opportunity has arisen to join the successful and nationally regarded Rough Sleeper service, which is part of the wider Housing Solutions Service. We currently have one full time temporary vacancy for a Rough Sleeper Support Worker to join us as at our new Whitecross Road Hub, providing interim accommodation and support to individuals who were previously roofless or threatened with rough sleeping.

You will become part of a highly committed, dedicated and knowledgeable team who currently offer an outreach service to rough sleepers and those on the cusp of rough sleeping in Herefordshire. The Whitecross Hub aims to work closely with a core group of those in need of accommodation following their experiences of rooflessness. The aim of the RSSW role is to support individuals in their long-term interim accommodation until they are ready to move on and live independently, as appropriate. The RSSW will establish firm working relationships with clients, other professionals and local charitable organisations working with this marginalised and vulnerable group, ensuring that previous barriers to housing and other vital services are reduced or ideally removed and to create individually tailored pathways out of homelessness for this client group.

We are looking for a flexible, versatile individual with a broad knowledge of housing and housing legislation. A knowledge of the benefits system and funding sources available to assist our clients is vital together with an understanding approach to our clients who may have a challenging and chaotic housing history. The successful candidate must have a patient, adaptable and empathetic approach to our client group, to be able to network with other service providers and those who offer other voluntary support services to our client group.

A minimum of 2 years’ experience working with this group would be an advantage although we would also welcome applications from individuals with experience of working in related services. You will be part of a vibrant team but must also be able to work as part of a wider service and undertake lone working as and when appropriate.

This post is currently offered on a fixed term contract as it is funded by MHCLG until 31/03/2026, but it is hoped that if future funding bids to MHCLG are successful the post can be extended in the future.

About You
  • Strong communication skills
  • Passionate about working with vulnerable people
  • Strong knowledge of housing and homelessness, including relevant legislation
  • Ability to handle complex situations in a sensitive manner
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
We Offer
  • A competitive salary, generous holiday entitlement, and access to our contributory pension and staff benefits scheme, which includes:
  • Starting Salary of £31,067
  • Pension Scheme Enrolment in the Local Government (LGPS)
  • Career progression: clear pathways to progress
  • Annual Leave: 31 days’ annual leave (pro rata) plus bank holidays. You can also purchase an additional 10 days per annum with line manager approval.
  • Flexible working: flexi-time, job-share, part-time hours and, in some instances, home working
  • Employee Assistance Programme: 24/7 access to support and counselling
  • Payment of professional membership fees
  • Pick your perks – our benefits include access to a range of retail, leisure, holiday and health benefits. This includes savings, cash back and discounts.
