Chief Constables' Message

We really welcome your interest in joining our Police Force. It is a privilege to lead the teams in Surrey Police and Sussex Police who continuously work selflessly and tirelessly in order to keep people in our counties safe.

We are looking for talented and inspirational people who put the needs of the public at the heart of everything that they do and who want to make a difference. If you feel you are that person then we want to hear from you.

We wish you all the very best with your application.

Chief Constable Tim De Meyer & Chief Constable Jo Shiner

The Role & Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference. It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.

The threats facing Surrey and Sussex are constantly evolving, and offenders continually find new ways of committing crime. The information needed to confront these risks is not always evident. That's why we need Intelligence Analysts to help make sense of what's going on and direct our response to some of the most complex and high profile cases in our counties.

We are looking for people who can identify connections from big data sets and evolving intelligence. You will have to ask insightful questions to get to the heart of a problem. You’ll identify, interrogate, and assess information from a range of covert and overt sources. You will need to understand complex and technical problems, explain your thinking, and come up with creative solutions to help tackle crime.

You will be working on a variety of critical, strategic, and high risk incidents. At times you will be under pressure to build a big picture from small pieces of intelligence and threads of data. You will need to be flexible and creative, and able to communicate your findings to front-line staff and chief officers. Your problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and presentation skills will be crucial in keeping our public safe and tackling criminals.

Key Responsibilities

Intelligence Analysts provide sophisticated analysis that supports officers and staff in effective decision making around complex problems. This is critical when policing is being asked to do more with less, and where accurate information and persuasive judgement needs to reach the right people quickly. The context will vary according to the specific role, ranging from problem solving, volume crime and anti-social behaviour, to organised crime, counter-terrorism, homicide and other serious crime and strategic issues.

You will advise and assist in all aspects of investigations by providing strategic and tactical analysis of intelligence, evidence, crime, and disorder. You will identify offenders, series and trends, and information gaps. You will suggest opportunities to gather intelligence and evidence, prevent or disrupt crime, progress investigations, solve problems or otherwise reduce threat, harm and risk.

Please note that due to the nature of this job, there will be times you may be exposed to investigations of a distressing nature.

Skills & Experience

We are looking for candidates with the following essential skills and experience. All applications are anonymised and will be assessed against the below listed specific criteria, which should be clearly evidenced within your application form:

  • Graduate calibre or equivalent qualification, or with proven and well evidenced experience of crime/intelligence analysis in a relevant field;
  • A high standard of problem solving skills;
  • Well-developed computer skills including the ability to learn bespoke systems, and design and develop recording and analysis frameworks by using databases, spreadsheets and other analytical tools;
  • The ability to use logic and reasoning to influence others in a professional manner, to persuade people by using powerful arguments; identifying clear aims in negotiations and achieving satisfactory outcomes;
  • Previous experience of interpreting and evaluating large sets of qualitative and quantitative data to extract salient points, develop inferences, and make recommendations;
  • Well-developed communication skills both written and verbal, and the ability to present appropriately to groups or individuals, including senior managers and partner agencies;
  • The ability to plan ahead, to manage and prioritise their workload unsupervised and respond flexibly to rapidly changing demands;
  • The post-holder must take personal responsibility for their actions and for resolving issues or problems that arise, being focused on achieving high quality results and developing skills and knowledge;
  • The ability to work calmly and effectively, especially under pressure;
  • A flexible approach towards achieving team objectives and a willingness to undertake a wide range of duties.
Why Work With Us?

Policing is an exciting 24/7 business and we all have commitments outside work. We're invested in supporting people to balance their life with work and we encourage flexible working. We are open to conversations about job shares and part-time working. We encourage agile working, giving you the opportunity to manage your own diary and work wherever you give the best service to the public. This may include flexi-time and home working.

We take pride in looking after our people and offer a variety of benefits:

  • career progression
  • contributory pension scheme (LGPS)
  • generous annual leave allowance
  • discounts for everyday spend
  • on-site gyms and a range of sports clubs
  • generous and supportive parental leave
  • financial and mental wellbeing guidance and support
  • discounted contributory healthcare scheme

Please use the following links for more information on the benefits of working with Surrey Police or Sussex Police.

Further Information

We currently have an immediate vacancy based within the Intelligence Team at Horsham Police Station focusing on community issues such as anti-social behaviour, violence against women and girls (VAWG), and acquisitive crime. The post-holder will be expected to collaborate with our partners to identify and develop multi-agency solutions.

In addition to the current vacancy, this recruitment process is for a pool of candidates who may subsequently be offered positions arising across Surrey and Sussex for a period of up to 9 months.

Please mark your application clearly, to show if you are interested in either the Analyst position based at Horsham, the recruitment pool, or both.

The ability to travel and provide on-call cover overnight and at weekends on a rota basis is a requirement of most roles. If called out, you will be expected to travel to Sussex Police Headquarters, in Lewes, East Sussex.

You will be willing and able to attain Intelligence Professionalisation Programme (IPP) certification in line with the role. On completion of the IPP, you will progress to the next salary band which is: Surrey Police £38,064 - £45,058 and Sussex Police £39,813 - £43,920.

For further details, please contact Senior Intelligence Analyst Sophie Dickinson via email.

If you have applied for an Intelligence Analyst position with either Surrey or Sussex Police within the last six months and have been unsuccessful at either the paper-sift stage or interview, unfortunately, you will be exempt from applying at this time.

The Intelligence Analyst role is subject to enhanced vetting, which you must successfully clear in order to be offered a position. A requirement of vetting is that you have been a resident in the United Kingdom for a minimum of five years.

Please note: If your application is successful at the paper sift stage, you will be invited to take part in an assessment and be invited to attend an interview which will take place in June. The assessments and interviews will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams.

Diversity Statement

We are only as good as our people. It's important that our officers and staff can be themselves in the workplace and we know that as an organisation we'll grow from the variety of thinking, approach, and the skills that diversity brings; all of which help us to deliver a better policing service. We strive to ensure how we deliver our services, provide information, and how we recruit is open and accessible to all.

We have multiple staff support groups who help to improve our understanding of minority issues and ensure they are reflected in our work. We are proud members of Disability Confident, hold Race Equality Matters Trailblazer status, are a signatory of the Race at Work Charter, and are aligned with the Armed Forces Covenant and the HeForShe movement.

We are committed to being an anti-racist police service. We promise to challenge injustice, ensure fairness, and uphold anti-racist principles in both our organisation and our communities. For more information, you can read our full anti-racism statement here.

We value the differences that people bring from all backgrounds and communities. Regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, disability, social status, or religious belief, we would love to hear from you.

Additional Information

Following submission of your application, you will receive a confirmation email with a copy of your application attached. Occasionally, emails from this address can fall into spam/junk folders, so please ensure this is checked regularly. You may wish to consider adding to your address/contact list to ensure you receive all communications.

This post is being advertised in parallel with Force redeployment processes. Any redeployees who are identified will be given preference. This may result in the post being withdrawn at any point during the recruitment process.

Please note that not all jobs are available for internal candidates across both Forces. The current agreed recruitment principles are:

  • Vacancies in collaborated units are available to all officers and staff across both Forces.
  • Vacancies in non-collaborated units are only available to officers and staff within the Force with the vacancy unless it is advertised externally.
  • If the vacancy is advertised externally and an officer or member of staff from the other Force is successful, it will result in a transfer of employment.

Surrey Police and Sussex Police Special Constables, Volunteers, and Agency Staff (excluding self-employed workers) covered under the Agency Worker Regulations (AWR) are eligible to apply for internal advertised posts.
