Job summary

Tilbury Douglas is offering a year-out Quantity Surveyor placement on site in Devon, within the South West Infrastructure team. You’ll work with experienced professionals, gaining exposure to cost management, procurement, contracts and commercial decision-making on live projects.

You’ll develop practical knowledge, build professional relationships and take on increasing responsibility as your placement progresses, returning to university with valuable commercial experience.

Qualifications

• Currently studying towards a degree in Quantity Surveying or a closely related discipline and undertaking a placement year.
• Full UK driving licence, or working towards obtaining one by Feb 2027.
• Strong problem-solving skills with a practical and logical approach.
• Good written and verbal communication skills to engage with a wide range of people.
• Collaborative mindset and willingness to take on responsibility.
• Placement or site experience is desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Assist with day-to-day commercial management of construction projects.
• Support preparation of cost estimates, budgets, forecasts and commercial reports.
• Assist with procurement of subcontractors and suppliers including enquiries and quotations.
• Develop understanding of subcontract packages and commercial processes in appointing and managing the supply chain.
• Assist with subcontractor valuations and payments.
• Help monitor project costs against budgets and understand how financial performance is managed.
• Support identification and management of variations and changes.
• Develop understanding of construction contracts and contractual requirements.
• Maintain accurate commercial records and project documentation.
• Attend commercial, project and progress meetings and contribute as knowledge develops.
• Develop understanding of commercial risk and opportunity and how they are managed.
