Job summary

Milk Education is recruiting a Year 1 Teaching Assistant to support primary schools across Stockton-on-Tees and surrounding areas from September 2026. The role involves assisting the class teacher, supporting phonics and early reading, and helping pupils develop confidence and independence.

Long-term, full-time opportunities are available with a fast-track compliance process and ongoing consultant support. A caring approach and experience in Key Stage 1 are desirable.

Qualifications

• This role is for Year 1 teaching support in primary schools.
• Experience in a primary setting or with young learners is desirable.
• Phonics, early reading, writing or maths experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Support the class teacher with engaging Year 1 activities.
• Provide targeted help in phonics, reading, writing and maths.
• Encourage confidence and independence in pupils.
• Support individuals and small groups to aid development.
• Observe progress and give feedback to the teacher.
• Promote a calm, inclusive classroom environment and behaviour.
• Support children with SEND where required.
• Assist with personal care where necessary.
• Build relationships with pupils, parents and staff.

Year 1 Teaching Assistant - Stockton-on-Tees & Surrounding Areas

Milk Education is working with a number of welcoming and supportive Primary Schools across Stockton-on-Tees and the surrounding areas and is looking to recruit caring, enthusiastic and dedicated Year 1 Teaching Assistants to join schools from September 2026.

Whether you're an experienced Teaching Assistant, hold a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification, or have recent experience supporting children within a Primary School setting, we'd love to hear from you.

We have a range of long-term, full-time opportunities available, with the potential to become permanent for the right candidate.

As a Year 1 Teaching Assistant, you'll play a vital role in supporting children's learning and development, helping to create a positive, engaging and inclusive classroom environment where every child can thrive.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the class teacher in delivering engaging learning activities across the Year 1 curriculum.
• Provide targeted support to pupils during phonics, early reading, writing and maths activities.
• Encourage children's confidence, independence and engagement with their learning.
• Work with individuals and small groups to support learning and development.
• Observe and monitor pupils' progress and provide feedback to the class teacher.
• Promote positive behaviour and help maintain a calm and inclusive classroom environment.
• Support children with SEND where required.
• Assist with personal care where necessary.
• Build positive relationships with pupils, parents and school staff.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

• Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification is desirable.
• Previous experience working within a Primary School or Year 1 setting.
• Experience supporting phonics, early reading, writing or maths is desirable.
• A good understanding of the needs of children in Key Stage 1.
• A caring, patient and nurturing approach.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• A genuine passion for supporting children's learning and development.
