Job summary

Harrow Council is seeking a Workshop Technician (Semi-Skilled/Skilled) to support its fleet services in Harrow. The role is temporary, up to 40 hours per week, with a competitive hourly rate (£21.23–£24.16) negotiable by experience and structured training plus 21 days of annual leave.

You will inspect, service, and repair vehicles and plant equipment, diagnose faults, and complete safety checks to keep frontline operations running, while adhering to DVSA standards and Operator Licence

Job description

Based at Harrow Council’s depot, this temporary Workshop Semi-Skilled / Skilled Technician post supports fleet services across the borough. Working up to 40 hours weekly, the successful candidate performs inspections, servicing and repairs on vehicles, machinery and plant equipment, diagnosing faults and completing safety checks to keep frontline operations running. Applicants should show mechanical aptitude, familiarity with hand and power tools, and the ability to follow technical instructions. Pay ranges from £21.23 to £24.16 per hour, negotiable according to experience, with structured training, career progression and 21 days’ holiday plus bank holidays offered through Pertemps Recruitment Partnership.

Role Overview: Pertemps is proud to present an excellent opportunity for a motivated and experienced Workshop Semi-Skilled / Skilled Technician to join Harrow Council’s fleet services team. Key Responsibilities:

• Carry out regular inspections, servicing, and repairs of vehicles, equipment, and plant machinery.
• Ensure all fleet assets are maintained to the highest standards, remain operational, and comply with Health and Safety regulations, Operator Licence requirements, and DVSA standards, minimising disruption to service delivery.
• Diagnose and report recurring manufacturer faults to the Workshop Supervisor or Manager.
• Participate in ongoing training to enhance technical knowledge and support the delivery of a safe, reliable fleet.
• Work flexibly within shift patterns, including weekends, standby, and callouts, to ensure service coverage during core business hours.
• Contribute to achieving a 100% first-time MOT pass rate for fleet vehicles.
• Promote teamwork and collaboration, while taking personal responsibility for assigned tasks.

Candidate Profile:

• Holds a valid UK Driver’s Licence with access to a personal vehicle.
• Holds a current UK Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Licence.
• Qualified, or willing to train, in MOT testing for Classes 4, 5, and 7.
• Experienced in ensuring compliance with Operator Licence and DVSA requirements for fleet vehicles.
• Adaptable to changing demands, with the ability to meet objectives, resolve issues, and make sound decisions.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with effective presentation and interpersonal abilities.
